Good Morning all! I finally was able to get some pics of my RIRs but it was quite the task to get them to let me lol. They didn't want to hold still long enough like they did when they were younger in my first post about them so I apologize about the quality of them. Im still not sure if they are pullets or roo's but Im leaning twards pullets since Ive seen no waddle development. I also think that I have two different age groups considering two of the 5 are not as developed feather wise and coloring as the other three. As a recap....when I got them(from the feed store) on March 9 I was told they were 1-2 days old and were all pullets. But they had feathers on their wings. Me being a first timer with chickens I took it as gospel and joined this site. Lo and behold as I started delving into articles I learned they were OLDER....go figure...lol...so I'm thinking that as of today I have 3 six weekers and two 5 weekers give or take. But I am happy to say they are growing and thriving and one of the younger ones has taken to sitting on my shoulder everytime I have to clean out the brooder. They have graduated to a larger brooder ( converted kennel) since the tote they started in got too small. So if you all could help me with my suspitions about if they are pullets that would be awesome! Aslo one other question.....I know that I cant put them outside till they get all of their feathers for body temp regulation, but it seems like the feathers that are under the wings still have to come in. Are the feathers suppose to come all they way up under the wing or just half way up? Thanks for all the help!

**As a way to distinguish each bird I marked the pics by number and their back pictures with a letter ex...ch1 & ch1a = one chick

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

They are perfectly good t go outside at least for day trips right now! I usually provide a huddle box and and a fencing to home them to it.

Some of the feathers will never turn regular... like bum feathers always stay fluffy looking. Maybe under the wing as well. I didn't see any of the markers you said you used to identify the pics.

It's possible ya got two age groups, but also possible they are just developing at slightly different rates. :)

They do all currently appear to be pullets! :celebrate

*does the happy dance* YAY!! I was so hoping for hens and not a roo my first time round with chickens.

As for the feathers...under the wings they have feathers that only go half way up but no fuzz (I call them half nakkie birds lol) so that's why I was curious as to feather development.

For some reason why when I was loading the pics on the site it only loaded the markers on the last jpg thumbnail when it was suppose to load them all like that....but I was having problems with my computer too so could be due to operator error...smirks.

I really would like them to go outside due to them being in my kitchen and I am trying to lower the heat lamp temp in the brooder but they freak out everytime I do! But Im also realizing that they are needing more room so there isn't as much bickering going on. I have a coop ready for when they can go outside I've just been waiting on feathers and weather (its been raining a lot and night time temps are in the low 40's, everything I have been reading is that its optimal for nights to be 50 or above. Unless they are training me for the 'good life' instead of me training them !! :))
