First off what types of tools do you have available?

The "U" might work, but if it is what I think it is, the weld between the "U" and the bolt probably will not hold up to the torque.

The 1/8" X 1" absolutely will bend out of shape the very first time you try it!

Sorry, I am not meaning to shoot down your ideas. You are on the right track. Thats really how this pattern came about. I had a mental picture of what I kind of wanted, shopped around the local junk stores (in my case Army Surplus) and pieced together something that would work. You would be surprised what you can find.

Option #1 (easiest)
It sounds like you need to get it moving now and don't have the luxury of scrapping things together. If you have a helper, even a small one, your best bet might be picking up a cheap furniture cart. Have your helper lift the cart on one end and you push from the other. There are a couple of good ideas in this post also which would work really well in conjunction with a furniture cart.

Option #2
Instead of the metal bar you mentioned you could get some 1 1/2 square tubing, bolt it to the "U", mount the tire on the tubing and use a piece of 3/4 pipe for the lever, just stick it in the end of the square tubing. You could probably pick up the square tubing from a local weld shop out of their scrap bins for a reasonable price. But like I said, I am not sure if the "U" will hold up.
Option #3
The bearings that are shown in my design can also be bought from Northern Tool and Supply for about the same price the Army Surplus sells them for. 1/4" plate could be used for mounting it all together (again cutoffs from a local weld shop or metal supplier). Four "U" bolts and a couple of length of 3/4 inch pipe for the levers. If you had everything laid out the weld shop would probably drill your holes for you at an hourly rate.

Please, shoot down any idea that won't work! Doing it by trial and error is becoming very labor-intensive!

The square tubing is a great idea--I saw some in the same bin at the Home Depot where I saw the 1" bar. I don't have a northern Tool and Supply here in the south, but perhaps I can find them online. I'd rather use something that has been proven to work then take a chance with something else, and do it right the first time--uh, the third time!

Question: into what end of the square tubing do I put the metal bar--the bearing end, or the wheel end?

Here's a link to my thread, so you can see what I'm working with:

This is just the run. I still need to build the coop. It will be smaller and will move separatly from the run.
