I have a single hatch chick I'm raising for a friend. It's a Serama hatched by hen Christmas Day, sole survivor (2 died that day & the last egg wasn't good) hen gave up on it. Have had it in the house (plastic bin) with heat lite (40watt) & MHP (heating pad).

The first 2 days the left eye was shut while the right would partially open, I applied warm compress 3x day & on it's 3rd day the eyes were open and fine. Hadn't eaten, gave it a drop of NutriDrench & ground up some feed for first 3 days, put Poultry Cell in water. On the 4th day saw it pecking at feed & drinking water, it would scratch at it's eyes (AM) & noticed it was getting crusted again. So every morning would clean with warm water & fine the rest of the day, this went on for the first 2 wks before eyes cleared & was good now ... 6wks on Saturday.

Feb 2/Wed - We were in the patio & it was sitting on the arm of the chair, I heard a "sound" coming from it but lasted only a few seconds. Never heard again
Having read of 'upper respiratory' & the noise plus eye symptoms, we came in the house. She's fully feathered, still in the house even thou the brooder is in the patio; mid - high 50s in the evenings, warming to high 60s - low 70s mornings. I take her out to the brooder, adding her heat lite in the afternoons, when it's nice/sunny let her follow me around in the yard. But the majority of her time is in the house/bin or patio/brooder.

Feb 4/Fri - Woke to find her L/eye covered with a white cloudy gunk. Cleaned with warm compress, R/eye fine.
Feb 5/Sat - 6wks old, eyes are fine
Feb 6/Sun - Today woke to find clear bubbly gunk both eyes...VetRx arriving today. She's eating/drinking & it's probably an upper respiratory infection.

She started off on potty pads the first 2 wks, then switched to pine shavings. I wet her feed which would occasionally stick to her face, as well as shavings, maybe an allergy? Any ideas would be appreciated ... Sorry didn't think about pictures but will add IF the problem arises in the morning.

My questions ... How do they get it? Is it possible that she got it when she hatched; being abandoned by the hen? Never used VetRx what's the dosage? I do have Terramycin, should I apply to her eyes? She is spoiled & thinking she may end up my house chicken instead of going back to her owner.

4th pic Feb 06 Bin set up, removed most of shavings but left some. under the MHP as she likes to "bathe" in it under the Octopus
Hope I won't have to one with her yucky eyes in the morning

Parents could have it and never show symptoms as its stress that bring it out or could simply be allergic to the shavings
Will let the owner know & removed most of the shavings in the bin (thinking dust irritation). She likes to "bathe" under the MHP in the corner under the Octopus. Vet RX arrived and starting treatment. So glad she's content in her bin. I need to clean out the brooder next. Thank you

Sorry to hear about your Roo :hugs
The parents for this one is offspring of her original trio that didn't have many successful hatches. This is the first hatch for these parents. I prefer egg layers = Pets with Benefits, not into the miniatures although they are so cute.

There so small anything can kill them use to have silkied seramas those where cute lol now all mine are standards as raccoons ate my silkied seramas

This is not the first single hatch of Serama I'm raising for this friend. Yes they are so very tiny, think this one is smaller than the one I raised early last year, turned out to be a cockerel which got sold. This one is "different" in personality and content being in the house, has yet to attempt flying out of the bin ... Stays in the brooder, I leave the door open. May see if she'll let me keep this one, she has been so easy to "raise".

Just need not sure I want a chicken in the house ... Although thinking she can go out in the brooder during the day, come in at nights. ;) Will see as the deal is I raise until they're 8wks ... That's how I got involved with chickens, raising chicks for another friend until she got carried away .... From only 10, each clutch increased until I have 50 at once. I was done.
