You could do something similar with a $5 plastic crate or a clothes basket.

clothes baskets work well too...

I have bought many a farm animal (rabbits chickens ducks etc) in clothes baskets with chicken wire, BBQ GRILL Grills, oven racks, etc tied to the top!

I have used the clothes baskets to let the bunnies out to munch on some grass once in awhile...just flip it over and put something heavy on the top. Worked pretty well and I am sure it would work for chickens too! you could cut the bottom out and attach chicken wire so they get more sunlight too...

It's really not a tractor but more like a cage, the idea should work just fine given your explanation. But calling it a redneck tractor is a stretch LOL, unless it has a nascar something or other gaudy thing hangin off of it LOL.
