Sorry I have been MIA the last few days ... We're having torrential rain here. Flooding everywhere. On the 7pm news, the local stations were reporting that the Hollywood/Leonardtown area of St. Mary's County, Md has documented up to 10.5" of rain in the last 24 hours. Added to the 3" previous, and the 3" that was still to come last night ... OMG. Even my ducks are seeking shelter.
On top of that, we personally are dealing with a very hurt horse. Vet believes she was bitten by a snake or black widow spider and then an infection set it.
Have to ice her leg for 20min. every 3 hours throughout the day and night because of the immense swelling, have a catheter in her neck for IV administration of antibiotics, and have to keep her from casting herself on the stall wall because she can't support herself with the bad leg. It is her right hind and if it attacks the bone, she won't make it; but the infection erupted last evening and it is now draining down her leg in two places. Which is good and bad. Will heal faster because the pressure is released, but will also cause extra work and problems because now there is an open wound with which to deal. Her high fever (105.5) combined with extra weight on her good hind leg because of favoring the infected leg opens her to the risk of laminitis, which is another big concern. But she is, thankfully, responding to treatment so far and the vet believes she will eventually pull through.
I am still going this weekend, though! My husband will hold the fort down here; I've trained him well.
Thanks much for the well wishes and concern everyone!
Hey, I was about to put up about 10 chicks from my latest hatch up on craigslist and I thought I would check here to see if anyone wanted them - if someone for sure will take them I'll bring them on Sunday, so let me know ASAP. I'd charge a few bucks on CL just so I don't get someone who is feeding snakes, but these are free to anyone from here. They are almost three weeks old and I *think* the majority of them are roos. Of course, it's too soon to be absolutely sure, but covering my butt just in case they really are all roosters. I'm trying to bring up just a small group at the same time as my seven silkies so they can all 'room' together, so about 10 will need to go and I'm going to pick out the more 'roo-ish' ones first.
No red combs yet, but they are still babies - and I am lousy at sexing so they could be all hens with my luck. LOL.
Anyone who will definitely take free baby possible roosters please let me know. They are adorable, pics available on request later tonight when I'm home from work. I'll go through them tonight and see the exact breeds but my hatch consisted of the following: Cuckoo maran (definitely a few of these in the mix), Blue/Splash Maran, BLRW, Brahma (Supposely light, but they don't look very light at the moment), blue orpington and there's one cochin in there as well. I don't want to bring without a confirmed taker - don't want to stress the babies out for no reason!
I love rain but this is ridiculous. I think this rain should have been spread out a little. Left both windows open in my coop last night - could not decide if they'd leak or not or blocking would make it too humid. So left them open and now I have wet pine shavings in there. Bleh. Can't do anything about it until this afternoon but they are free range so no worries. And the roost bars are all dry. And it's STILL raining!!!!!!!!!

OH I KNOW!!! the rain ( according to weather report) is supposed to stop early this afternoon-for the rest of the weekend! I have to rake up meaties pen and put down fresh hay for those poor birds to stay dry for a day or so before they get walloped. If Im brave I might do it tonight-or at least try to get 6-8 done and more tomorrow saving 5 for Sunday to do.
