UPSTATE NY chickenstock OCT 3rd Sunday!! -The aftermath and hatching

That's great you had 8 hatch. We had a LOUSY hatch, and I think it was all my fault! I got a lav from the lav split egg...I'm stoked...but it has spraddle leg, so I need to find a way to fix it!

Pipe cleaner, figure 8 it up close to the body.

So I went out this morning to have coffee with my flock. (Morning ritual on weekends) and the ducks who always find it necessary to come over and tell me all about it, as I put it, came over, quacking... I look down and my white crested "hen" has developed a curled tail! SO I guess I have a white crested DRAKE. This could be interesting. Putting a crested over a cayuga hen could lead to some awefully cute crested babies!

Oh...good idea! We just found a link and used a bandaid cut up the center length-wise. If this doesn't help I'll get the pipe cleaner out. Always good to have a back-up plan.

Nice thing is his crest is not one of the real big ones, so no terminal genes

I think stress/cool weather was a likely candidate for the youg ones going down hill down.

Wait, I thought it was heat that stressed them out, or are we only talking about the babies? My big girls do NOT like the heat!

The chicken was caught last night. It was a huge hilarious production.

I'm sorry to hear about the chicken troubles. Hope everyone perks up.

Cool isn't good for the little ones unless they have been "climatized". We don't have...... nor have had real heat temp spikes "heat"since the gathering here or there. It rapidly got coolerthe weekend of the gathering..... thus the problem. You might not feel it otherwise, but believe me the temps are totally different from here to there. Been a 50% difference at times. I m only 5 1/2 hrs away and used to live there. NOT the same as downstate at all.
