UPSTATE NY chickenstock OCT 3rd Sunday!! -The aftermath and hatching

I thought I would check this thread before leaving again, and I'm glad I did!

Muggs, I just wanted you to know that Fay, the young Buff Am hen we got from you, layed us a lovely blue egg and is doing very well! No health issues whatsoever! I'm so sorry you are having birdy health problems!

If Fausto can't hold himself and didn't have issues before - crate him when you aren't home and crate him at night. Treat him like you are house training a puppy. Sometimes when dogs change houses they don't realize they need to not pee in the new house. When he can't be under your direct observation, he needs to be crated. When you say "it is like a horse peeing in the house", I expect that means he pees a large volume? Is he being let out frequently enough? If you are house training, he needs to be let out every 1/2 hour or so, just to be sure he relieves himself outside. When you come home after he has been crated and first thing in the morning - he goes outside with somebody to make sure he relieves himself outside before he can come back inside. You may need to go to a feeding and watering schedule, to help him control himself. You may need to start adding water to his kibble, so he isn't so thirsty after eating. There are lots of things you can do to get this under control, so don't get too stressed about it - just try to prevent the accidental peeing instead of dealing with it's aftermath. keep a sharp eye on his behavior, because once he understands he needs to pee outside, he will let you know by specific body language.

Thank you guys!

Brindle...here's the story so far...

At first I thought he was peeing because of separation anxiety when I took my kids to school and picked them up. Then I thought he is just marking his territory. I am a stay at home momma, so he is here with me all day. He was drinking a lot a few days ago, but I have since put a limit on his water intake. It is not a matter of crate training him anymore (plus he broke his metal crate...busted clean through it when we went out to dinner last Saturday night!)...and he has peed a flood in it numerous times. We were gone two hours. He has peed in the truck w/ Craig driving...he wasn't excited either, or nervous...it was a six mile drive from home. Just peed. We let him out at 5:30 am, 7:30 am, 8:30 when I feed the chickens, at 11:30 am, 1:00pm when Craig comes home for lunch, 3:30pm when Craig gets home from work, 6:30pm when we lock up the chickens, 8:30pm when the kids go to bed and 10:30pm when we go to bed. Not to mention when we hang out outside, he's out there with us (on nice days)...and he pees. Lately I have been letting him out a lot MORE frequently. This morning when I fed the chickens he peed in the same spot for 7-8 minutes and peed a nonstop steady stream. He then went over to my neighbor's rosebush and peed all over it (it's funny to me because she is a jerk), then went over to a junk bale of hay near the coop and peed for another 2-3 minutes straight. That was the 4th time he was let outside today all before 9 am!

I took him inside immediately after, and he laid down on his doggie bed in the living room, next to me. He fell asleep. I heard what sounded like stifled water pressure, and thought it was his belly growling. I looked closer and he was peeing. I brought him into the kitchen, and he continued peeing. This is just after peeing so much outside just a few minutes prior. This has been going on since Tuesday Oct 5th. He pees just as much inside as he does outside. There is no warning. He has no other access to water...not our toilets, tubs, sinks...just what is available to the dogs, and I have since been controlling that. It hasn't helped. I have tried treating this as he is new to the house and needs to learn his parameters...but it isn't any longer about him not knowing where to go, or what we expect of him, or not being able to go outside enought to relieve himself. It boils down to incontinence. That is the only term put to this. It boggles my mind, because Bob says he had no problems with him. The first day we had him, he "tagged" my bookcase. Again, thought he was marking his territory. He doesn't lift his leg in the house anymore. Just stands and pees. We don't yell at him, and we would never beat him, but giving him the "disappointed" tone works to get my point across. He gives me the saddest face you'll ever see...I truly feel that he can't control himself. I'll open the backdoor for him to go outside when I catch him "mid-stream"...he can't shut it off...he will continue peeing while walking to get outside, pee on the deck, and pee where he stops. I have since been putting newspapers under him, as this limits the cleanup.

He gave me the sign this morning that he needed to go outside...I hurried up and flew out of bed and let him and the other dogs out (around 6am...he'd already been out twice before Craig left for work). I thought he took off running when I was calling them back in...it was dark and raining. I ran back to my bedroom to get my glasses, then put on a jacket and boots...and ran outside. I called for him. Nothing. I turned to go back inside to get a flashlight when I noticed a dark shape...Fausto was in the same spot peeing as when he started...7 minutes later.

I brought him to the vets again this last Tuesday...he peed all over their entryway, all over their scale, waiting room, and peed in the private room. All within 30 minutes of peeing for minutes on end at my house. (The vets office is 1 mile away from me). They tested his urine, they took a blood sample. The urine showed a higher count of white blood cells, but still within normal range. The fecal sample was collected fresh yesterday and sent out to a specialty lab...everything has come back normal. Last week he was put on a round of wormer, medicine for the yeast infection in his ears, and given frontline.

Last week the vet told us to put him on puppy food to gain weight. He weighed in at 116 lbs. They said he needs to gain at least 10 lbs to be neutered. He eats 10 cups of Puppy Chow and 2 large cans of wet puppy food a day...plus doggie buscuits, and occasionally sausage patties. He has only gained 1 pound in a week. We are on our 2nd 35 lb of dog food in a week and a half! That's how much he eats. The vet does not want his diet to change, so we are sticking with it.

Our 3 small dogs have gotten acclimated to him, and now try to play with him, and will lay down with him. The kids adore him. Our 5 week old puppies try to get him to play with them...one was gnawing on his toe last night, and he didn't do a darn thing about it. His personality is wonderful.

We are at our whit's end.

Muggs dont be scared to say something you got 3 birds from me-white orps and NN roo---I havent had any problems with any of my birds. The only issues I have had are with the new chicks I got and they have been on sulmet now and doing great. This is so disheartening--are my orps gurgly???

They were housed with my Olive eggers since they hatched and I have never had issues with them-the meaties I raised -now they are stupid as a box of rocks and never came out of rain and when they were about 3 weeks old they ( 2-3 had girgly noises-but cleared up within a week or so) that was it:-( I never even put them on meds because it wasnt an alarming gurgle almost like a sneeze backfiring once or twice?? If your birds are eating and drinking youve won half the battle---your glass is half way full:) Just stick to the meds-this weather is not helping anyone right now-we are getting dumped on with snow right now=---YES SNOW!!!!

Muggs, I truly believe the dog has a UTI. He needs antibiotics. Even if the WBC count was "within normal range" it may be an issue. He's peeing in his sleep? We had him all that weekend at CS and never saw those behaviors. I really think your DVM missed something. It soooo sounds like UTI. Just like in people, sometimes a "lab count" or the "norm" is not the norm for that particular person/animal.

Kristen...I seriously thought the same, but the vet says no, it's not a urinary tract infection. I would agree to the frequency of peeing, but not the amount of pee. Add to this, the dog is WONDERFULLY lazy. After 3 hyper dogs, it is a relief. He doesn't exert much energy, we can't pinpoint where the food is going. As my husband says...he poops a "silkie" everyday. It's not much for the amount he eats. We are beside ourselves with what is going on.

Nat, all of your birds are doing well! It is currently my original flock that is showing these signs.
