Hello fellow chicken enthusiasts!

My municipality changed its bylaws to allow backyard chickens in urban areas. We were thrilled!

We are limited to just five hens, but nevertheless we built them the Hilton of coops. I love how curious and communicative they are.

The learning curve has been steep, and our harsh winters challenging. Happy to be a part of this group!

Congratulations on the changed bylaws, although I don't know how I could possibly limit myself to only five hens (says the woman who was only going to keep four -- and now has 19).

People who don't know chickens too often don't realize how entertaining and enterprising they can be. Sitting outside and watching them go about their day makes any day better.

Harsh winters are a challenge, and chicken-keeping in winter is a real testament to your devotion to your birds. But, it's good exercise, running outside a gazillion times a day to make sure none of the winter layers' eggs freeze before you can gather them. Or, to make sure their water isn't frozen or iced over. And it's worth every trip!

Welcome to BYC!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

That's great news on getting the laws changed! That first year or two can challenge your chicken knowledge but over time you will learn the ins ans outs, what to and not to do to keep them happy and healthy.

Welcome to our roost!
