URGENT!! Can these chicks be alive?

Hi! I discovered two hidden nests of eggs in my coop. We had been on vacation, and it seems that one or more hens were sitting and left the nest, because I have not seen them sitting for the past four days. I candled the eggs and discovered that most were about halfway there. During the viability float test, some were less than halfway out of the water. There were no veins or movement though. What should I do?

How hot has it been where you live? If they got cold at all the are for sure dead, but if you dont want to take the chance you can incubate. I usually see veins. No vein probably means their dead. We had it happen where one of our eggs got cold overnight and died.

Thanks so much for your reply! It is hot here but cools down at night. They do not stink. The ones in the picture are about half of the fourteen I found. One seemed to have bacteria upon candling, but I just don’t know enough about hatching to tell for sure.

Can you get pictures of the candling? The float test is not recommended except as a last resort for live eggs.

No they are mostly likely NOT ALIVE...especially since they are sitting in water. That alone would have most likely killed them for sure.

Oh, I guess I didn’t understand my chicken books. I hope I didn’t inadvertently kill them. I can attempt pictures.

No they are mostly likely NOT ALIVE...especially since they are sitting in water. That alone would have most likely killed them for sure.

I thought the float test worked for eggs at all stages. I hope I didn’t hurt them. They weren’t in the water for very long.

Here are some candling pictures. My makeshift candler pics aren’t great and one was too blurry. Anything? I think three and six have bacteria rings. And something smells, but it could be the poo, they’re very dirty.

That’s sad, but I was kind of expecting it. How can I tell for the future? Were there indeed chicks inside? I would rather not throw them away, should I bury them? Should I do an eggtopsy?
