URGENT: Coyote Attacked Roo, First Aid Advice Needed!

He is doing well so far! I have been squirting chlorohexidine on his wounds twice a day, and then spraying them with Vetericyn gel. He also has aspirin in his water but I should be getting Metacam from someone this week. He never went into shock, and he's been sleeping in a dog crate in the house at night so he's nice and warm. It's been beautiful and warm outside too so I put him in a dog kennel during the day. He misses his girls, but I want his wounds to heal up a bit before putting him back because all he wants to do is mate.

Excelllent advice already given, and you're doing super. Two things: unless he picks at the wound, or it gets dirty from shavings or other sources, leave it uncovered--or at least loosely covered. It's best to avoid a warm, moist environment (like a bandage) with a "dirty" (non-surgical) wound. Regarding flies, do you know what fly eggs look like? If not, they look like miniature, tiny grains of rice that somebody arranged in little stuck-together groups, with the "rice" standing on it's pointed end, usually. If you see anything like that, clean it off IMMEDIATELY. Maggots WILL kill healthy tissue with their excrement, and then consume it, burrowing deeper and deeper. Once that wound is REALLY dried and scabbed, he should be safe, but use that bluekote before letting any other poultry near him.

Thank you! I removed the gauze the night after the incident and have been only flushing it and spraying it with Vetericyn since. The Vetericyn gel spray is keeping flies at bay I think because it covers up the smell of the wounds.

This morning all of his wounds have dried. The one under his tail is scabbed shut, and the two places where the skin is gone have darkened considerably and are not weeping. The tissue where the skin is gone has formed a "crust". He does have some bruising around the wounds as well. I think I'll keep him separated for today and then re-evaluate tomorrow to see if he's ready to go in with his girls.

Wonderful! Watch the wounds, and if you see any sign of pus, remove the scab so the pus drains, and resume your cleaning. Don't let any pus get walled in by the scab.

He's doing fantastic! I flushed the wounds with chlorohexidine and then applied Vetericyn afterwards. I did this at least once a day and so far his wounds are dried and dark. He was trying to preen them yesterday which tells me they are itchy, and that means healing! He got to stay with the girls yesterday and I think he's good to stay out there now. I need to check the wounds today, but so far so good!

This may sound silly, and it was recommended by someone to me. To keep my roo from pecking his wounds I ended up putting a baby onesie on him obviously open at the bottom. The tanktop onesie was much easier to work with than the one with sleeves. It did help.
