URGENT.......Dog attack, chicken seriously injured...nerve damage?

well she made it through the night but has not eaten or drank yet. her leg is tucked in a normal position underneath her at the moment (so dont think its dislocated or broken?)
what is this neosparin (sp) people keep talking about? we dont have too many sprays and stuff available to use for chickens, and certainly not antibiotics without a vets prescription! and gatorade....someone explain that one too me?

I know that neosporin is freely available in the USA, but over here in Australia it is a prescription only human medication that most people have not heard about! It may not be common in belgium either!

Use an iodine solution such as betadine to cleanse the wounds if you have that

Neosporin is the brand name for a very basic first aid antibiotic ointment, you want something with antibiotic properties, but without a pain reliever ("caine") of any sort.

Gatorade is a drink made of corn syrup, food dye, electrolytes and water. It is what a lot of sports people drink to rehydrate themselves.

I did not think that the wounds looked terrible. If she survives the shock, she has a good chance of surviving. Good first aid goes a long way-keep the wound clean. Best of luck.

well i think we're going to have to let her go

i thought her leg was tucked up nicely underneath her but it was actually hidden in the straw, its a very pale colour and she has no movement no her toes or the leg itself, its just hanging there.

the wounds look nice and clean but i think its going to be the leg that kills her

perhaps then it is broken? can a broken leg be fixed? or if it is nerve/muscle damage, how long until we see improvement if at all? im worried about the colur, she could have been lying like that all night/day. perhaps the blood flow was stopped?

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl. We lost one of my favorite hens last week. Two of my greyhounds got a hold of her. They didn't kill her, but they ripped her open and her intestines were coming out. We thought about trying to save her, but with the risk of infection, we couldn't let her suffer. It isn't an easy decision to make but sometimes is the best for them.

MY chicken is the same. two days ago she was attacked by one of the neighbor dogs that got losse from the fence. The dog instantl came over and bit her in the back. She has sever nerve damage.. i think her spine was broken and she canot walk. Her left leg she cannot use, she is paralyzed. I have been caring for her for the past two days though she is not getting any better.. will she heal and start walking?????

You just gave me hope! My own stupid dog dug a hole overnight to get to the back yard and ate 3 of my meat chicks--just 2 wks old-- and he tore a chunk off one of my egg laying hens.. poor thing.. my husband suggested we kill her n eat her but i dont want to eat her, she lays eggs for me, she's a pet not a meat bird. Now i know i can at least try to save her. Thanks for your input!
