QUESTION: Has anyone had luck using a brooder plate for an improvised hatching station?
Cleaning out the scatters of an abandoned broody nest, I found two dead pips.
Started to open one ... and it gasped, bled and peeped! My N360 'bator's power cord suddenly decided to fail, so I now have a partly zipped egg in my unmentionables. I planned to candle the other 14 eggs (there were four broodies on a communal nest,) but now I'm scrambling to find my little candling flashlight.

EDIT to Add: I can likely find my old brooder light, if I need it, but it's going to need a thorough cleaning, first - which is really difficult to do while your brassiere is peeping!

At this point I'd say do what you need to. The brooder plate is enough for newly hatched chicks, and with a blanket over it I'd think it would be warmer. Use a thermometer to check, but when I tested mine it was around 98 degrees. Certainly better than nothing!

I did - it's cross-posted! I REALLY don't want to lose these babies I didn't think I wanted! :(
You did what?

Breathe.... breathe... :hugs

And try the oven method, it really works quite well.
