I collect rain water in a barrel from the roof of the coop and run it out with a hose to fill the waterers.
It works great except for a few weeks I the year when the hose freezes.
I just got fed up carrying water so now I don’t have to.

Can you explain how this connection works? Is it just open or is there an internal catch?
Ideally, you get a spout set up for that so you can reduce debris falling into the water barrel. I believe there are several different ones available.
And an overflow (in case your downspout is routed into the sewer system) or away from the water barrel. I would have definitely needed one or 2 of them last week, it rained buckets 3 or 4 days in a row!

a quick google search:

because it is a thing - unless it is forbidden

I have the diverter in your search. I aLeo have the foam inserts in the gutter which do a great job keeping debris out.
