Hi there,
My chick hatched this morning and has a small protusion on it's bum with something yellow in the middle. Will it dry up on its own or do I need to do something?
Thanks
Jen

Hi.
It is really difficult to tell much from that photo, particularly in relation to exactly where on the chick it is.... ie. is it the chicks vent or it's umbilicus.... I'm thinking possibly the latter and the yellow bit is a little unabsorbed egg yolk.... the chick absorbs the egg yolk into it's abdomen before hatching and lives off that for the first few days. Some chicks hatch with the egg yolk unabsorbed which presents a risk of infection and rupture. If it is just that tiny amount with your chick, I would imagine it will be fine. You may want to put a dap of antibiotic ointment on it to prevent infection until it dries up and drops off. I am no expert on hatching though as I have only ever used broody hens, so other more experienced hatchers may have better advice. In the mean time getting a better photo will help people to be more certain of the situation though.

Hello..Too me it looks like it still needs to absorb the yolk. It will possibly sleep lots as well. It can take up to 24 hours to fully absorb. Keep it clean by using paper towel once you move it to the Brooder..Hopefully it becomes active soon..Best wishes..:frow

Thanks so much folks. I think you are right, I think its unabsorbed yolk. The rest have hatched and are in brooder now so it can be left alone to dry up. I'll try some ointment on it too. I'll give it a few hours and post another pic. :)

Just to let you know it needs to dry up and putting cream on it will keep it moist which then allows bacteria to get into the umbilical..
