Hello all!
I have four coturnix quail living in a brooder about too move to their hutch but haven't yet. They are five weeks old. This morning I noticed on of them had red on the back of its head and I picked up and noticed that all of the skin on the back of its head is gone and one of it's eyes is bleeding and damaged it's wound also smells a little bad. I dont know how long it's been like this. I just noticed today. I cleaned the brooder a few days ago and it was fine so this happened after that. Please help me save my quailie it was the first one to hatch and these are my first quail so it's pretty special. I don't think a vet is an option but if it really comes down to that I might be able to find a way to make it work Please help. I feel horrible I don't know how it happened. I don't see blood anywhere in the brooder but I havn't looked at the other quail to see if they might have pecked it.
Any help is awesome. I have it under a heat lamp by its self right now it walks if I pick it up or touch it but otherwise it just sort of stands there with its head sort of to one side. Sorry if this doesn't make sense or if there are typos I wrote this as fast as I could. I can answer any questions or post more pictures.Sorry if I posted any picture more than one I did it fast. I posted in the quail forum too but it was suggested that I
Thank you for any help

Have you washed the wound in mild soap and water yet? Or flushed with saline? Is the smell like butchered meat or road kill?

If this is a fresh wound, it should be healable. I have a hen with a similar injury I'm treating right now. A rooster tore off the back of her scalp when she refused to cooperate during a mating attempt. I use Vetericyn and antibiotic ointment on it each day, keeping the wound moist so tissue will regrow.

No I have not washed it yet. I was advised in the other thread to just clean it with iodine. What do you think about that?
The small is like dried blood and meat sort of it doesn't smell horrible but it does smell.

I would use warm soapy water, or chlorhexadine (hibiclens) and flush it well and gently clean it. Try to remove any debris that may be in there or stuck to it. Then do as @azygous said with the neosporin or veterycin. I also had a hen that was recently scalped and that is what I did. I separated her until it was not a pecking risk, she has healed up well and you can't even tell it happened except that the feathers are still a little small.

Thanks for the advice but I got some help in the other thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...d-and-eye-is-damaged-smells-bad-help.1311866/
I treated him with iodine and antibiotic ointment. I may wash his wound tomorrow or another day if it needs to be washed but I didn't want to put him through the stress.
Again thanks to both of you for your help. I just saw it after I had already recieved some on a different thread.
