Young quail has been scalped and eye is badly damaged. Wound smells bad.

Do y'all think it's fine to leave him or the night and clean him up in the morning after he has rested? (assuming he's still alive)? I could treat him right now I'm just wonder what you all think would be best.

His head smells like dried blood and rotting flesh. Should I wash it with something? And should I clean his head and eye or let him be?

Personally if it was me and I am no expert, I would get him wrapped up snug in a towel and clean his wound again if it smells that bad. Do you have anyone who could help you? I've read this whole thread and maybe I missed it but you can make a homemade saline solution https://www.thoughtco.com/how-to-make-saline-solution-608142 after rinsing with that you can apply the triple antibiotic again.

I know he doesn't have a name and this may sound weird but you can talk to him in a soothing calm voice while doing this and it may help him feel at ease. Something like " Hey big guy, it's ok. I'm just trying to make you feel better." Or words of your choice. I'm really praying for him to pull through.

Thanks for the link. I think I'll mix some of that up and wash his head eye and then put more ointment on it. Yes, my parents can help me. They were just busy yesterday.
And yeah I'll talk to him, I don't know how well it worked before but I'll try again. Thanks for your help!

Hello all!
The quail survived the night but his wound is smelling worse so I'm going to clean it and put more ointment on it.

This happened to one of my quail. What I did was isolated him, cleaned the wound gently with water and hydrogen peroxide. Then, I put him in a different box (it was one of my old brooder boxes) and put antibacterial ointment on it twice daily, and let him heal. He had plenty of water and food, and he healed within a week. The only flaw in my plan was that quail aren't the smartest, and within that week my babies had forgotten all about him and were very aggressive towards him. IF you go this route, make sure you introduce them back carefully. Best of luck!
