Young quail has been scalped and eye is badly damaged. Wound smells bad.

Well I see that he's still doing good! That makes me happy for you. That was quite a scare! Keep on doing what you've been doing and he should heal up just fine!

Should I try to wash his eye so will know if its infected/has to be treated and if it's still there or not? Or should I wait a few days. I'm going on a two night canoe trip from saterday-monday so if I'm going to do anything to the quail it has to be today or tomorrow.

Yes, you can try to clean it out. You can use your eye solution for that part as an eye rinse. judging by how he reacted with his head, he might not be so great when you are cleaning his eye, so just be prepared.

Yeah, i'm not expecting him to cooperate but we'll see. Can I like dab at his eye with a wet washcloth until I can see whats going on and they clean it with the solution?
I think it would be less stressful for him if he could see with both eyes and he may be able to if I clean it. I'm not sure. Should I leave the rest of his head alone when I clean his eye?

I'm going to do it tomorrow. It's to stressful for him. He hates to towel and he's already been through a lot today.
Good idea. He's probably already wondering why you put that stuff on his head. It seems like he's clueless to his injury or it just doesn't bother him until you touch it, which is a good thing because he will thrive through the healing.

When one of my chicks was “sleeping” and I realized her eyes were stuck shut, I used q-tips soaked in warm water and gently dabbed and pulled the crust out of her eyes. I had to do that hourly for three days before they finally started to stay open on their own. I also happened to have leftover feline antibiotic eye ointment when one of my cats had crusty eyes that I used on on her. I don’t know if it was the hourly cleaning or the antibiotics, but 9 weeks later and she’s fine and healthy.
