Urgent, please help my hen!

Hydrate her, give her little bits of bread or anything she likes. I'm wondering if she may have a heavy worm load taking her down.

Thanks tiki.

So I filled her crop with gatoraid and baby food. She's very lethargic at this point and somehow feels even thinner than yesterday. I have no clue how she's even able to lift her head. She can't walk. Ah those bones are going to haunt me forever. Why is this happening???

That's kind of what I was thinking. How would a chicken get worms though? I wanted to go to the feed store and get a de-wormer but it's close for the holiday

if she doesn't make it I'm goin to buy some anyways and use it on my flock

i had this happen to my barred rock her comb turned sorta yellowish but she wasnt as thin as yours is. try smelling her breath maybe she has sour crop. my pukie died in my arms and i had no clue how to stop it. im so sorry for what your going through hopefully she will recover.

They say here when you start worming your chickens for the first time to treat with Wazine in their water and do a more thorough worming later.

I'd keep hydrating her. You could add a quarter of plain crushed aspirin, a little bit of crushed tums or calcium supplement. I have some powdered gatorade at home. You could use a pinch of jello powder for taste (cherry or strawberry). I drip it on the top of the beak with a dripper and they'll 'sippy sip' especially if you're sweet talking them. In fact I'd encourage it because it'll encourage her to drink.

Try little bits of soft bread to eat.

Also something to think about, maybe she needs some antibiotic because of respiratory problems. Any other symptoms?

Mites and lice can kill. Did you say she had a pale comb because external parasites can cause this too. You could give her a nice flea bath. The last time I bathed one I used the Adams with Precor. It's a good time to do the 'sippy sip'.

BTW, chickens get internal parasites from the worms, snails, soil they digest. I doubt there's a chicken in the world that doesn't have them.

I guess in summary, external or internal parasites unless she has other symptoms (i.e., swollen abdomen, crop, sneezes).

She's starting to stink. I hope it's just the poop stuck on get butt an nothing else. Why did this have to happen on a day that the feed stores are closed???

How would I go about looking for lice or mites? Is there a certain spot on the bird that they prefer to hang out? Are they obvious, like do they scatter about quickly? I have parted er feathers in a few spots and saw nothin but last night after holding er there was a bug on my arm. Would a bath help? Should I give her one?

Do you has some flea and tick shampoo like you'd use on your cat or dog? You're going to have to towel and blow dry her afterward. Don't let her get chilled. Some people will put the food grade diamataceous earth in food to expell some worms but it's definitely not a solution. Do you have any chicken friends nearby?

I can't say I've ever seen the lice or mites on the bird but I know when they're scratching alot I do some kind of treatment and their combs will almost instantly turn a nice cherry red. You know they're feeling better when they're concentrating on food rather than themselves.

Does she have a big swollen abdomen? Sometimes that and stinky diarrhea will mean some egg binding or internal laying problem. You know I'd just stick with a simple flea bath for now.
