I have recently hatched seven california quail. Today one of them has died and it seems like he/she has died because of a red, infected bottom. When I notice one has this, they are squatting on the ground with their wings collapsed and can not move. I just found another one like this. when I find these, I put them in the incubator separated from the others and put some Neosporin on their bottom. right now I am down to six and one dying. PLEASE HELP THIS IS URGENT.

Kelsie gave your good links to post on. Have you changed feed lately? I wonder if something harsh may be going thru their intestines and causing the sore bottoms. Have they been eating or pecking at things they shouldn't touch?

Welcome to BYC!

Sounds like they have have some sort of infection. How old are these quail? Is this a new incubator or have you used it before?

They may also be over heating at the same time. Don't cover your brooder with anything but a screen or wire for good heat and oxygen exchange. Keep the heat off to one side, the food and water off to the other. 1/2 square foot of space per baby. This is very important. Start the temp at 97 degrees, with a good thermometer directly beneath the heat source on the floor. Use an infra red lamp only.

Lay down paper towels and sprinkle crushed feed all around the feeder on the floor. Dip their beaks in the water several times. Quail are not very smart and can die of thirst very easily. Tap with your fingers at the feed to get them started eating as well.

Keep us posted!!

Thank you all I will do what you have suggested and hopefully they will get better soon. the one i found yesterday with the red bottom is in the incubator and almost dead:(. The quail are about 2 weeks old and all of them seem to be thriving exept the one in the incubator. No this is my first time hatching quail from eggs andy have not used the incubator before. the incubator type is the mini brisnea advanced.
