Urgent Reminder-PLEASE Quarantine Newly Acquired Birds!

Yes.

The Vaccination prevents the neural lesions that are the complication of Marek's that usually leads to death. The vaccination does not make them a carrier, but exposure to Marek's even after vaccination can make them a carrier. A carrier can infect other birds.

I am bringing this up to the forefront again since I have had conversations with folks on BYC who have purchased birds from other members that obviously came to them as disease carriers, as well as being malnourished with obvious vitamin deficiencies. Please, if you go somewhere to buy birds and something is "off" about the birds, the environment, etc, walk away without them. No bird is worth sacrificing your own healthy flock!

I also want to say to sellers, please treat others as you would have them treat you. DO NOT SELL SICK/INFECTED/CARRIER BIRDS! It begins with YOU, not the buyer. Have the decency/ethics to inform buyers if the birds have been treated for anything respiratory or you think they may be carriers-give the buyer the option not to bring heartache into their flock! Don't pass on your problems to unsuspecting buyers. It's the only right thing to do. Tell them to quarantine birds they get from you for at least a month or more. I do, all the time. Keep your nests clean if you sell hatching eggs, too, so you don't contaminate someone else's incubator with ecoli.

+ eleventy billion, Cyn!

I'd also add that buyers should ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS when you are thinking of making transactions for buying any type of fowl. Be as educated as possible about sellers - do your research before transacting with them!!!

Cynthia, I have searched but I cannot find your 10 Commandments of chicken keeping. Can you provide a link please?

Good idea in reviving this!

I would also like to know this. I am building a second coop for quarantine purposes and need to decide where on my property to put it.

Would 200 feet away be sufficient? If not, could the quarantine area be closer if it were inside of a building? Let's say, maybe 100ft away, but located inside of an insulated shed?

Thanks!
