Urgent Reminder-PLEASE Quarantine Newly Acquired Birds!

Its always best to decide what you will do in the situation with ill birds before you have them. I decided this would be my approach long before I had chickens, after reading about the various diseases and how they affect the flock. Every person should make his/her own decision after gathering all the facts.

my cousin who lives next door and has a flock of his own wants me to loan him my golden polish roo so he can have "prettier" chickens. I don't know how to tell him no, he buy's birds from the auction all the time.

sorry don't mean to steal the thread

Just tell him no, that you dont want to risk your boy contracting anything. Tell him you've heard too many horror stories of people losing their entire flock because of something like that. Personally, I have no problem protecting my flock and I wont apologize for it, not even to family. You cant just "stud out" a rooster like you can a dog.

ok your right I don't know why I'm being squeamish I'll just offer him some eggs. I have time he is only 8 wks but every time he sees me he mentions it. And he lives next door so he won't forget.

Unfortunatly in today's society more and more people do not take care of their animals as they should thus causing the problem.

Many people get into animals for the wrong reasons e.i money.
Then before they know it, they have 100 birds and finf out it is sometimes very hard to turn a profit so they cut corners and the birds suffer. Buying adult birds is very tricky thing. I do not buy adult birds from anyone who does not take care of their flock to begin with, and therebye avoid much of those problems, I did not say always just sometimes.

my cousin just keeps buying birds from the auction cause they're pretty. He bought RIR's for the eggs and then he saw my chicks and now he's jealous. That's ok , I'm jealous of his ducks and heifer.

Just FYI everyone! It's not only the "ADULT" birds that you have to watch out for. Chicks can carry and spread disease also. If you choose to buy birds of any age from someone, be sure to quarantine all of them. Chicks and all. I'm learning this the hard way and could loose my whole flock all because of a 6 day old chick.

Like I said, just FYI.

There seems to be a lot of members that are having issues with new birds being introduced to and infecting their flocks.

I would like to remind everyone at this time to PLEASE quarantine any bird for at least 4 weeks that you bring home BEFORE introducing it to the rest of your flock. This will save you so much heartache, time, and money in the long run.
