We went out to feed our chickens today and noticed that one of our golden laced Wyandot {Speckles} appeared to have an egg stuck with poop stuck in her feathers. We removed her from the coop and tried to wash the poop off and remove the egg. After washing her a little we discovered there is no egg and it looks like her insides are coming out of her. There is a lot of pink fleshy lookin stuff hanging out and it was throbbing. What is wrong with Speckles and what can we do for her?

A picture would help. That sounds like a prolapsed vent. It can occur with or without a stuck egg. Calcium deficiency, egg binding, and dehydration can be some of the causes. I also believe that some hens are just prone to it from a lack of muscle tone. The key is to lubricate the vent and push the red tissue back inside as soon as possible so that it does not dry out and die. Keeping the vent clean, applying honey, Preparation H ointment, or witch Hazel to the vent are some of the remedies. the vent prolapse may reoccur as soon as the tissue is pushed back in. Hold it there for several minutes (rubber glove suggested.) Daily warm epsom salt bathes may help. If you notice any dark tissue, that can be becoming necrotic or dead. Many of these hens recover, but many have to eventually be put down, especially if more tissue comes out. You will want to place her in a dark cage or room for 16 hours a day to stop her from laying eggs (if she is laying.) Here are some links to read:

What you've got is a vent prolapse. Irrigate the tissue with 50/50 betadine/water. cover tissue with vasaline. Glove up and lube up (KY or something) gently push tissue back in. Do not let this tissue dry out! Keep bird in a dim area to discourage egg laying. Feed soft foods like scrambled or boiled egg, wet mash ect. Use hemmerhiod cream on/in vent to reduce inflammation and tighten tissue. This may happen several times in the next 24 hrs. Put it back in every time, wash, coat, return. Give her a good week to recover, keep all birds away in the meantime. Good luck, ask anything else you need.
