US Crele and White Sport Legbar Breeders - Alternative Legbar Group, for those not breeding to the P

As the white is recessive, breeding back to normal CL will produce autosexing chicks that look like regular Cream Legbars, of course since recessives don't show up unless homozygous.

My understanding of a 'new variety' is that it would breed true for 5-years....and that would mean parents and offspring looking alike and not alternating normal and white- as I understand it.    As yet, I have only heard of one person getting white to the F2 (two white parents) - and the autosexing was a bit unknown as I recall from a photo of the chick and discussion -- and no adult follow up was posted that I know about.    Perhaps this is some of the source of confusion where people say that they will be 'breeding true' for multiple generations if in their eyes that incorporates normal CLs to put autosexing in every-other-generation.
:O)

Interesting topic, as enola says and food for thought.   To me it would have to be 5-years of breeding white-to-white producing autosexing chicks and not breeding back to normal to be considered breeding true as I understand the APA requirements.

I agree.

And i too have only ever just once heard of a white to white parent producing a single white chick. Other than that i have never heard of 2nd gen white CL from 2white parents.

The beauty of practical experience =)...to be continued...

My experience with recessive white is it breeds true generation after generation . Since these come from pure Legbar the barring gene is there already . So auto sexing as long the chicks have enough color tint in the down to see the head spot . In Ameraucana recessive whites are usually based on black and have a smokey chick down . I have also had white down and a slight yellow tint to the down . These seem to reflect the base or hidden color . I will experiment with my hybrids to test my theories . I have no recessive white Legbars . I can cross to recessive white Ameraucana to bring it into the hybrids . Should be interesting . Theories are fine . Test breeding is solid evidence .

I believe the whites are recessive . Therefore there are no white birds that are hetrozygous . I would like to work with some to see if the auto sexing will hold . It should . Recessive whites in other breeds can have different color chick down depending on what color is hidden .So apparently this striped yellow is what down color you get from cream Legbar .
I would like someone to takeover my White Legbar project. Anyone who is interested please send me a PM. I have a 20 month old Creme Legbar Rooster, and a 16 month old Creme Legbar Hen, both carrying the recessive white gene and their daughter a 10 month old White Legbar. I was hoping to carry on the project this Spring but don't have any room for raising more birds.

@ChicKat there is someone in Indiana who already has F2 or F3 White Legbars but they don't participate in any forums. Maybe someone can get a cockerel from them and cross with my white pullet to get to F2 with some more diverse genes than my trio.

F2 or F3 meaning white offspring that hatched from 2 actual white parents, not CL carrying the recessive white gene?

I sent you a PM, convenient since I'm local and starting my own white legbar project already as well as having an 11 week old white pullet and a few likely split to white roos and pullets as well..

Yes, thats what I meant by F2/F3 I will find that person and post their contact information. Unfortunately all they respond is to their auctions but I know people who have ordered from him/her and are happy.
