US Crele and White Sport Legbar Breeders - Alternative Legbar Group, for those not breeding to the P

I'm starting work on a white sport line right now, probably take a year or so before I can really offer anything up for sale though as I have to breed the white gene true from some split to white birds...
I think the white is very pretty. How is the auto sexing on these birds? Is it still easy to tell on down the line?

I'm guessing that will fully depend on how well the auto sexing is in the line of birds used int he first place, there are some diluted auto sexing cream legbar lines out there right now, and there are some strong auto sexing lines... With a strong auto sexing line you should be able to breed a line of white auto sexing just fine, but it's one of those things you are going to have to pay attention to as it's not going to be automatic or at least obvious in all cases...

Good point. There are several threads about people sexing their chicks at hatch, and later they realize one of the "pullets" turned out to be a rooster. Banding your chicks to mark male and female would prevent that. Also, if you hatch Cream Legbars and you have a few chicks that you just can't quite tell if they are male or female, those chicks NEED to be removed from the gene pool.

Since the autosexing of cream legbars is dependent on the combination of the wild type (dorsal chipmunk stripes) and the barring gene in dual factor in the males (white head spot), some autosexing has been accomplished on the F1 recessive whites. I have yet to see anyone who has demonstrated clear auotsexing in later generations - and some of the F1 recessive white CLs are difficult to autosex according to what I have heard and seen on forum.

Subsequent generations will show neither the wildtype (should be based on gold duckwing) nor the barring, will they, since their parents will have neither. I am VERY curious how people would see autosexing in subsequent generations of white CL.

Two white parents would give neither gold duckwing nor barring plumage markings to their offspring would they?

It would give one pause to call the recessive whites legbars if autosexing is one of the legbar traits.

that is probably absolutely right. I hadn't thought it out that far.

So if someone wanted to be able to dependably sex white sports at hatch, they would have to use barred breeding stock that carried a white sport gene.....

And you are probably correct that losing the auto sexing ability woild cause questions about classifying them as Legbars.

Good for thought. But, I still want some when I can have chickens again.

Hope that will be really soon for you. In the meantime -- travel. ;O) so that way when you get your chickens once again -- you will be happy to stay home......

. I agree that the whites are beautiful -- it is one way to see the legbar type without the distraction of the colors.
