US sued over Navy sonar tests in whale waters..

The biggest problem has been active sonar. The "ping" creates a scattering affect that confuses whales and dolphins, and it can easily be heard over 100 miles. I think a new generation of magnetic anomaly detectors would solve the confusing effects of active sonar and allow for greater stealth for our subs. Just a thought.

Red, it deafens the Whales and Dolphins. They wash ashore with burst eardrums. So yes, that is why they are suing the Navy.

But i wonder WHY the Navy is doing it?
I just HATE to think that they just dont care and have other options....

There are substantial studies that clearly indicate that for a number of years various species have suffered a wide range of detrimental health impacts due to sonar. The area they want to practice in is home to many, many endangered species, and there many places within this range where these whales congregate that are really necessary for their survival. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a valid reason for it.

We won't know... but our military does have a history of test "overkill" - even at the cost of its own citizens and health. Remember all the nuclear testing? They overdid that, for sure. Is it the case here? No way to know, but asking the military to respect wildlife probably isn't the worst thing to happen.
