I was reading last night about hawks and chickens and saw that someone used pallets to provide protection for his chickens. I can no longer find that article and was wondering how he made them. Can anyone direct me to that thread? Thanks

I can't recall the post, but I've seen many "pallet shelters" in pastures. They are simple t make, just set two pallets up together like a pup-tent and nail them together at the top to form a "A-frame". If overhead predators fly over the chickens can hide in the "tents".

Hope that helps!

It was to my understanding that they were just up on cinder blocks so the chickens could get underneath but still have an escape route in case the predator decided on a ground attack.

Unfortunately some hawks (Cooper's for example, and it is THE chicken hawk) will chase their prey on the ground: through, under and around obstacles. THere was a study I read that showed that the percentage of Cooper's with significant untended but healed injuries (broken bones and the like) was very high, and most seemed consistent with on-ground collisions.

Thanks so much everyone. I'm trying to give them another option rather than under my deck - where I can't get in to cleanup the poop !!
