Using a spigot and hose to drain the duck pool

I have to imagine that an aquarium pump would be way cheaper than a 120v sump pump. I've never used one all the way across the yard, but a pond pump would do it. Might need a valve on the end if you have a serious pump so you don't blast your marigolds right out of the dirt.

Now, in the fantasy world where your pond is higher than what you want to water and you only have a single duck, cutting the top off of an IBC container would be nice and easy since it has a drain built right in.

Oh no!!!

Sorry, but that did make me laugh. I use about a 20 foot length of clear hose so I can see once the water is getting close. It is still fear of mine that I will get a mouthful though. :hmm

Yep... I think clear hose is VERY important. Blegh. I spit like 9000 times and ran across my yard head down slack jawed and washed my mouth out with hose water for like 5 minutes. It was truly horrifying.

You can use suction and/or gravity with the hose. Either start the hose inside of the pool and then just disconnect the end attached to the spigot, or use and old hose for the syphon. Lay the end down where you want it to drain and fill the other end with water from another house, put your hand over the end while transferring into the pool.

They also have these really cool contraptions called Water Pythons for fish tanks. You can make your own for the duck pools. This is what I use and it IS super easy, promise.

When I had aquariums I had a python. It was wonderful! AND won't clog easily!

Excellent suggestion!

I just bought a pond pump to drain my 35 gallon duckie pool. Going to give it a shot today by hooking a tube to the out-valve so I can direct the water where I want it. I had a type of siphon thing for my 50 gal fishtank (it has a hand pump to start the suction) that I thought would work, but it failed miserably because the pool is sunken in the ground and I couldn't get downhill enough to make it flow. Toyed with the idea of a drain, but Harbor Freight had this pump for relatively cheap, so might as well try it. One of my friends said he can finagle some extra filter material for the intake if it ends up getting stuffed with gunk. I'll report back after my experiment. :fl

Thanks for the info! I will definitely check that out.

Just think what it did for your immune system though :lau

I mean... if I survive! It was yesterday morning so I'm probably out of the woods but emotionally I am scarred for... until I need to empty the pool tomorrow.:rolleyes::fl
