Using a thermostat question

I am very happy with my incubators, but want to apply the thermostat thing like an incubator to my brooder I am making. Has anyone used a regular house thermostat instead of a water heater type?? Will this work?

I keep a regular thermometer in the brooder, on the bottom, right under the heat lamp. Works good, not sure what youmean?

When ppl make an incubator they hook up a light to a thermostat, to turn on and off the heat source as needed - like a house thermostat turns on the heat or AC as needed. I am wanting to hook upp a thermostat to a heat source in my brooder to regulate the temps.
