Hi Everyone,
We get our 10 hens next week and we're so excited. Our daughters can't wait to name them all but said need to see them first to make sure the name "fits"!
I do have a question. We are almost done our coop. We are using one end of a shed that many years - probably at least 20 years - ago had chickens. Do we need to do any special cleaning or anything to make sure there are no potential diseases still around?

Can't think of anything that would be around after 20 years. They will be exposed to things from wild birds, so will never be 100% safe. Ours are in an old coop run as well, and we've had no problems. Predators are the biggest worry. Good luck and happy chickens!

Hello and :welcome

You should be okay, we used an old coop that looked like it hadn't been cleaned out in years (it came with the property). A new layer of grass clippings atop the dirt floor and removal of the rusty old nest boxes, and we were good to go!
Anyway, chickens are pretty good at telling if there's something dodgy in the coop. If they don't want to go in after a week or two of getting accustomed there might be mites or something in there.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D
