I put an old sheet down and it seems to work great. I use some bedding for them to kick around and do what chickens do. It's a queen bed sheet, so not only does it help to contain the mess at cleanup but I can use it multiple times before having to wash it. Mine is a cotton fabric so it's a fairly smooth surface which helps.
