Using fat for soap?

I second that! And as in all things, moderation is the key.

We're the only species of mammals that needs 'experts' to tell us what to eat...

I don't touch crud at the store labeled low fat or non fat... imagine how much more junk they put into the food and how many more contrived processes they put the ingredients through to bring you a lower fat content... you body can't figure out what to do with these chemically simulated ingredients and 20 times processed fats...

When I check out at the grocery store my cart looks like I raided the food pyramid diagram... basic...basic...basic...

I would LOVE to know how to use all these animal fats too...could sombody experienced instruct a little? I really want to get away from using processed oils...my mom taught me to use crisco and I know its the devil... I need to get something similar in texture and relatively inexpensive. Lard melts at too low a temp though.

I am certainly no experrt but have spent years studying nutrition and health issues feel free to pm me as I dont want to rant for people not interested! For years my shopping cart has looked that way in spite of my kids complaints.. lol and no microwave cooking for us, their friends think I'm a real wacko

Http://thesage.com has a lye calculator for soap. I dont think it has chicken fat but I would treat it as a very soft oil probably along the line of vegetable oil. The first couple of tries will have to trial runs so just try a small recipe at first. I would definitely add a harder oil such as rendered beef tallow, not pork. Pork is soft too but not as much as chicken fat. The sage calculator has tallow in its list for figuring out the proper amount of lye.

So glad to see someone discussing making soap from chicken fat! I thought I was the ONLY ONE ON EARTH interested in this process. It is something I have recently taught myself to do and have actually made a few batches. I just thought it was such a waste to throw it out as I use nearly all of the parts of the chicken that I purchase in the supermarket. One day I would like to raise my own poultry, but that is not possible at the moment.

SoapCalc.net does actually list chicken fat in the oils list.

The most recent batch I made was HP:
50% Chicken Fat
45% Lard
5% Coconut Oil

The bars I ended up with cured quite hard and I don't find there is much of an animal smell at all. The batches I made were unscented because I wanted to see how much residual smell would remain. IF there is any there that perhaps my inferior sense of smell is unable to detect it is so slight that it would be easily covered with a bit of essential oil.

I have not attempted a 100% chicken fat batch, nor have I attempted to make a batch of Chicken Fat CP soap.

I have been using the Chicken Fat soap I made as a bath soap and find it wonderfully moisturizing. Next time I will add a scent of some kind.

Sorry to butt into your thread, but I just got so excited when I saw the topic and realized how recent the discussion was/is!

So how did the soap seem? Color and niceness? lol I dont know how to put it. Was it cool soap?

I thought it made a nice, moisturizing soap. I added oatmeal, which gave it a bit of an exfoliating quality. Wish it had a scent, but I will add an EO next time and I think it will be perfect.
The only problem I have found is that OTHER people seem to think the THOUGHT of using chicken fat for soap is gross. These are the same folks who don't have a clue that animal fats are used every day in making store-bought soaps. Some of them also seem clueless that you can't make soap w/o LYE... LOL

Oops!... You asked about color... It was a nice, creamy white until I added the oatmeal which turned it off-white.

People do get funny ideas about lye. :D I am going to have to try this chicken fat out. Oatmeal is great in soap too! I really like oatmeal, honey and goats milk. :D Gosh I think soap making day is going to be tomorrow!
