I have two Muscovy ducks who have happily been brooding chicken eggs for me in separate nests, and I've got about 3 days before they hatch. Should I remove the chicks as soon as they hatch, is the duck likely to be surprised at the emergence of non-duckling offspring and possibly injure them? I am wondering how quickly I should be prepared to take the chicks away and put in a brooder.
It's likely the muscovy flock hid a few duck eggs in the nests when I wasn't looking, so I was also thinking if I stole the chicks right away she might continue sitting on the muscovy eggs till they hatch later.
I'm not sure if these specific muscovies have hatched ducklings before, but my others have been great duckling moms.
