Using old wood to build a coop????... PICS

Quote:
Fill it with dirt and make an herb garden out of it....

Put a glass circle on top, and make a table out of it.....

oh the possibilities....

Oh yeah, I was drooling at that barrel, too. Such an awesome find!

that wood grain look like oak, which is typical for old barns. Definitely usse it--for a coop or anything else you might think of, and burn the rest--good wood!!

Regarding the barrel I would go to a wherehouse and get some metal banding they use to palet stuff, wrap it around inside the grooves then fasten it with a self tapping tek screw.
I would make a feed despencer out of it or put suspenders on it and wear it...but thats just me.

I can just imagine you doing that GopherBoy! But seriously that's a great looking barn with lots of salvageable wood - and I'm all for recycling - people actually pay good money to have that 'weathered' look on their coops.

You can do a lot with old lumber , but it will take a lot of patientand work.
here what I will do:
1-take all the nails out of the long good pieces any thing over 8'.
2-get a table plainer and clean this wood, and it will look like new
3- start building your coop and have fun.

You mentioned not having somewhere to keep your tools.I'd dismantle enough to build a small tool shed, secure it well, and get a good table planer. If cost is a problem, maybe you could rent one for a day or two after everything is down.I agree with making and selleing extra coops. At least you could recoop the cost of your new tools. Good luck, and the less said to the neighbors about your plans the better.

I know... I'm sooo excited.... but possibly they have left for Florida  Gonna try and catch them tonight if they are still home while there is still some decent enough weather left

Helpful hint I got from the hardware guy. We had old oak we were using and driving nails through it was like driving it through concrete. Hence his suggestion of using concrete nails for older oak wood. It worked like a charm no problem.

Good grief. People will pay good money for lumber like that- especially the big beams. get it and use what you want; sell the rest!
