Using sand as litter????

Would it be impractical to use sand during the summer, and change out to shavings for the winter? Forgive me if this is a foolish question that has been answered elsewhere.

I have the same question! I'm thinking about using Sand in the hot humid summer and pine shavings for the winter.

It'd be work, and you'd either have to buy new sand every spring or have somewhere to store the old stuff; but I can't see any reason why you coulnd't do that if you wanted to. If nothing else, it would be good exercise

Carol.in.WV :

I have used sand in my brooder (big clear plastic tub) and it worked so well I started using it elsewhere. Now my silkies and cornish roost on the edge of a black plastic tub like you get to mix concrete in and it is filled halfway with sand for weight but it also makes clean up a breeze with a kitty litter scoop. The edges are just the right size for bantam feet so everyone is happy.

Carol, do you happen to have a photo of the tub you mention above? I can't quite picture this, and this may be good for my little silkies (

my silkies!). Thanks!!

Oh my gosh! I switched over from newspaper to sand in my two brooders today and WOW!! Smell is all but gone, chicks are happy as they have something to scratch around in, and everything is wonderful!!!

I am definitely thinking sand is the way to go for the coop I am building!!
