So.... these are Marty's Delawares from the hatchery. The other babies I got from the IFA. I don't know if their intelligence is a breed thing (all I've read seems to indicate it is a smarter breed) or if it has to do with where Marty got them. I know he's talked about selling some more either as well-started or point of lay pullets, so I'd send him a PM if you are interested (he's PacsMan on here).

I picked out the bigger all-white one because she bit me when I was trying to catch the little one with lots of barring. So she's been a biter from the very beginning, but it's getting to the point that we have to watch our fingers around her at 8 weeks. We've been calling her Jaws.

The rest of the Peep Squad seems to be afraid of the snow, but the little Delawares are just taking it in stride. They are very laid back.

So far I've planted peas, beans, watermelon, cucumbers. The peas are up and looking wind worn. I'm hoping they pull through it though, they're my favorite. I've got about 20 tomato plants growing inside, they'll be ready to transplant outside pretty soon. Anyone else tried those starter planter things from Walmart? I love them! Got my Mom started using them this year too and she's got a whole mini garden going now by using them. Just waiting for it to quit snowing so we can move everything outside.

The girls haven't found the garden yet, they rarely venture up close to the house as they have enough to keep them busy in the rest of the yard. I'm hoping this continues all year long so I can have both chickens and garden, not sure how that will work out though...

It's been so cold I haven't been too motivated to go out there and dig. Our chicken run and garden space are right next to each other - the chain link panels of the run form the north fence of the garden space. We put up a temporary fence around the other sides of the garden once we start planting - it's 4-foot wire, with a gate, just to keep the chickens out of the garden when they're free-ranging the yard. On Monday we finally got out there to till the new compost into the raised beds. At the same time, we adjusted the chicken run , moving its gate to one end, and shifted the chain link panels to be closer to the raised garden beds. The main gate used to open into the garden space, so if the kids left it open they'd get into the garden - not a good idea, they really love tomatoes and they stripped all the blossoms off my beans in less than five minutes last year. I'm going to plant cantelope, cucumbers, and honeydew melons in raised hills right next to the chain link panels - the vines will climb up the chain link and shade the run later in the summer.

I've planted peas, swiss chard, beets, lettuce, carrots and spinach. I'm going to get some tomatoes, pole beans, a couple varieties of winter squash, and melons in next month. I planted pie pumpkins last year and decided they weren't worth the effort. I planted garlic last fall, it's about 10 inches tall already. Our fruit trees are blossoming, and I need to fertilize the strawberries and raspberries.

Have any of you ever bought vegetable plants from Kenyon Organics? They have an online catalog with pictures and apparently sell at a few local plant sales. They also sell from their location at 27th S and 10th East Tuesdays - Saturdays. I saw an ad for them on KSL.com and got a link to their catalog - they've got some really interesting heirloom tomatoes and squash I want to try, but I've never bought from them before. I want to try something new this year - not just the same old Better Boy and Early Girls from HD or Lowes.

OK... this is making my stomach churn. I'm fully aware reptiles have to eat too...and I've seen mice, etc advertised. I'm also in rescue so I know all the ugly that goes on. But this local ad for feeding her housecats (!) makes me just ill.

Why isn't cat food (even BARF type food) or mice good enough???? And this is coming from someone who does set mouse traps but I have saved tiny baby mice (long stories). I can't kill anything baby, just can't.

Someone placed an ad yesterday for free 8 baby wild ducks they had found. I left them a msg that it's illegal to "harbor" them and to quickly pull her ad. I have a licensed wildlife rehab contact that I could give her. She left me a msg thanking me and that someone fm the UofU wildlife div (?) picked up the ducklings (who also mentioned she was breaking several laws). I only PRAY that guy was on the up and up.

I would like to feed my cats chicks every now and then. Does anybody know a store in SLC that sells them (supposedly a store specialized on reptiles?)? I have found some online stores but shipping on dry ice is really expensive.
Thanks a lot!

What the hell??? I don't think that my cats would even know what to do with a baby chick. And if one of my cats were to figure it out, they'd have to contend with Tangerine Kitty who thinks it is his life calling to guard chickens (he also seems to know that the smaller the chicks the more protection they need).

Cynthia,
Hehehe.... Not yet dear... not yet.
I'm just a crazy chicken guy who can't have roosters, and is 'chicken' to buy an incubator. But.... I'm gett'n closer.

All,
BTW, figured I'd try my luck at selling a Delaware breeding Trio on KSL. ( http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=10566261 ) I'm giving a choice of Roos and Hens. Got a call today that a guy wants to come up and get them tomorrow. We'll see!

But we haven't built the coop yet and I have 10wk old 'chicks' STILL in the kitchen. This weather is awful!! They were loving life in the dogrun on grass during the day (yes shelter, netting etc.) and I'd bring them in at night, but now it's 24/7 in the house. They have grown and it's so crowded for them. They'll be FAT because I feed them veggie snacks several times a day to keep them occupied. Poor girls.

So anyway, if I'd have a coop I would have probably purchased your trio by now. Beautiful, just beautiful!

::who's still fuming about the lady that wants chicks to feed her cats:: What kind of person even begins to 'think' of something like that??? I guess it's good she's asking for frozen chicks, but how they got to that point I can't even think about. If she can't find frozen she might resort to live?
