Forgot to include the pic of the Little Eggs. I guess I did not attach it~! See how they are all about to fall off the front shelf? I better get cooking, or delivering these little babies to my nieghbors, I fear I am falling behind.

Sorry for the triple post, I keep forgetting..

Cindy I asked Michelle about the olive egg breeding, whether the Marans shouldbe the dad or the hen. here is what she said:

"It doesn't really matter, but I usually use ameraucana hens because their eggs are easier to candle/monitor in the incubator and typically hatch better for me than the dark marans eggs."

That makes sense!

Casa - 1/4 cup sounds right to me!

All the pictures of chicks make me want to run out and get mine right now!  Must build coop first...or at least start it!

Ok, I think I'm going to start with an Australorp, a Swedish Flower, a Golden Sex Link, an Olive Egger, and a Buff Orpington.  I'm a little bit worried about what I'll do once they all slow down/stop laying and I can't get any more hens but I have years before that happens...I'll worry about it then, in that time maybe the law will change and I'll be allowed to have more.  I mentioned getting five at once to my husband and he didn't seem too opposed.  He's mostly worried about what will happen if we get a year into it and change our minds.  I told him that a) when have we ever changed our minds about a pet once we were a year in and b) if that happens we can always sell them and at least break even.  So now I need to finalize and draw out my coop plans so we can get started building.

Speaking of which, what is this Tour de Coop that newtochickensut mentioned?  That sounds like fun!  I would love to see some backyard chickens in action, so to speak!  I've only been around one person's "backyard" chickens and they live on several acres and have a full barn, so it's very different than mine will be!  We're going to the Fair tonight and I will definitely be looking at the chickens with a whole different interest than I ever have before!
i know many in west jordan that get away with more than 5, i even know people with goats in their backyard. not saying you should get more than 5 but some people do. also many do not realize you have to get a permit, and do not get one. chickens are addicting i am telling you, they are about as useful pet as you can get :)

the-bird-man - that's good to know...not that I would...keep more...and break the law......or anything like that.

I have read up on the permit, it currently says that permits are only good through January 2013. I'll have to ask what that's about when I turn it in. I've actually considered a goat, I'd like to make goat cheese...but I think our yard is too small for that. :) Although my neighbors have a Great Dane and goats are much smaller. :D

i think you may have to get a new permit every year so that may be why. chickens are everywhere in west jordan, lots of people have ducks too. i have even found pheasants and they were not wild ether... how is your relationship with your neighbors?

ara.. Lisa is right, I'm sure we've all gotten a chuckle out of the things that you have said about getting chickens ...he he..and the thing is, your hubby will love them too ~ eventually.
You just let us know when you want chickens, I have the SF babies coming soon. Not sure about any of the other ones you mentioned being in a bator right now. That's the hard part, getting the chickens you want..all the same age, unless you are buying from IFA or Cal Ranch on the same day. Or, you happen to see some on ksl that are some of the ones you want, at the same age. But, be careful if you decide to buy from someone you don't know. You can get some icky sicky yucky's from some of the folks..don't get me wrong, there are a lot of folks selling nice healthy birds, but there are some that are not so clean and actually have sick birds. You will get to knowing what to look for when you show up at someones place.

Jill, talked with Ideal. She said they looked at the pictures earlier, and think that I should give them a few more weeks. She isn't sure why they look curly, they don't see frizzles in any colors but, red, white, and black. Black? Anyway, she says they go through quite a change, and she thinks they will start looking like Birchens in a while. She also said, don't worry, if they are still not looking like they should be in a few weeks, they will take care of it however I want. More chicks, or refund. I'm thinking you are right..and they are right, they just need more time.
At any rate...I DON'T think, the BCW's are going to change. Maybe over the years..after two or three moults! My polish is so speckled. LOL..but I LOVE it. I think she is one of the prettiest babies out there. I sure hope it's a girl. Going to be very pretty. I'm thinking I won't keep the buff laced..not caring for the coloring so far, and it is getting more of the buff coloring now. I am still holding onto my "cuckoo" Polish. That's what people on the Polish thread are calling "her", and all so far that have commented on the sex, are saying pullet. Makes me smile.

Her little hairdo is starting to fold back more and more. We will see..

ara...a picture of our coop..it has changed a bit since my hubby first built it, meaning, the run is longer. And, I now have a nursery coop, and another smaller coop and run, and, a little grow out pen at the end of the large coop run.

Here it is in the beginning stages. Will have to get an update on how it looks. It's older now, but
here you can see where the run ends..it is longer now.

That is the plan for next spring....at the moment I am waiting on the 3 hens to start laying to see what color their eggs are. I am getting antsy. I need my blue and dark brown eggs.

Wow you guys are chatty today! Sounds like a lot is going on.

Sphinx, your story made me laugh. I can so picture that horse tearing around and trying to get the calf starter from you guys. Glad you got the syringe thing figured out okay!

Aravis, may I impart some advice on starting out with chickens? You DON'T have to have every single breed at once

Things work out over time, and you'll gradually be able to shuffle what you have. I like your choice of chickens to start out with. Cynthia has been pretty excited about those SF's, so it will be fun to see how they turn out. They sound kind of similar to the Icelandics I have. Which, to play the devil's advocate for a second - If you want to try Icelandics, they are smaller birds, but mighty pretty and hardy little stinks. Thebirdguy (not to be confused with the-bird-man) breeds them. I've gotten some of my birds from him, and they are fantastic!

Well, it's been quite a day here. I had nightmares last night that something big was killing my chickens at night, then woke up and found that my BO was missing. I found her wandering across the street from the neighbor's yard. Naughty girl. And no, I still don't know why the chicken crossed the road

Gave my RIR and my Leghorn/EE a bath today, since one of them was stinky and the other had somehow acquired a light coating of poo around her neck. And then, when I was putting everyone away for the night, I cam up short one Icelandic pullet. Turns out she had slipped into a different neighbor's yard, and the neighbor and his daughter caught her and handed her back to me. Guess I get to do fence maintenance tomorrow. Oi!
