Utah!

A road trip to Idaho Falls sure sounds fun, Lisa. Depending on the day......

Delarooshens, If I have seen pictures of you, I don't remember. I'm sure you look plenty young though. I'm starting to feel my age occasionally. When that happens, I make an extra effort to go be childish to convince myself I'm not old yet.

Lisa, do you think the tube lighting helps deter predators? I like the idea, that's for sure.

I do have supplemental light for my birds. My timer is set to turn on at dusk and go for 4 hours. I don't use heat. Sometimes I'm tempted to bring a small space heater out there and put it in a safe place when the temps are below zero, but I never have done it.

Cynthia, how's your sizzle looking? Mine's feathers were being much more controlled than yours, and then suddenly, yesterday, two of the wing feathers started poking out at crazy angles.

My coronation sussex has suddenly gone very, very red in the face. I'm thinking maybe she'll be the next to lay, even though she's one of the younger girls at 21 weeks. I did catch the speckled sussex checking out the nest boxes. She's around 24-25 weeks.

Aravis, I have chicken watering nipples. I have one inside my large coop, another one in the run on the small coop side (remember that my two coops can be totally separate. I just barely took down the barrier between the two over the weekend), and then a tiny, liter bottle one also in the large coop because Fonzie is too short to reach the big ones. They seem to be messy drinkers, so I had to put a plastic tub/plate thing underneath the inside waterer because they were making a mess of the bedding. It didn't seem to matter much with the outdoor one. I bought my nipples from http://www.cconly.com/chicken_supplies/waterers and then used a 3 and 5 gallon bucket to make them. I got the heavy duty nipples.

If I make a road trip I will let you know. You would be good company! AND Id Falls is one place I can manage to navigate lol

I think the lights help....at first I wondered if it were lit up like a billboard attracting predators from afar---but I think them sitting there in the total dark makes them more vulnerable, the lights look cute too :p My husband has a solar spotlight in the run too, so we really can see out there pretty well to check on things. Mostly when our chicken-eating-terrier goes out to potty at night, we can make sure we know he is not around the run trying to get in all sneaky like in the dark. bad dog.

Lisa, you always make me laugh=)

So how do you keep those nipple waterers from freezing in the winter?

You're always welcome to stop by and say hi if you're around IF, even if there are not chickens involved

Cynthia, Sasha's bator is still with me. I keep having stuff come up that has prevented me from getting up her way, but I'm still planning on heading up there soon. Never fear, Sasha shall have her incubator!

Sphinx, that's exciting about your Sussex! Man, it feels like you only got that CS a short while ago.

You guys, you don't need to worry about your age. We have such a good lookin' bunch here, and we have tons of fun, no matter how old anyone is. And anyway, I got y'all beat. I'm at least 80 on the inside

I installed my new thermal cube today. I have two water's plugged into the cube. Also got my lights set up in the coop on a timer. Still toying with the idea of some type of heater in the coop. Still trying to figure out how the hang it from the roof studs but make it 100 per cent fire proof. I ran a light all night long last winter, but i really don't want to do that again this year. I seen the heater setup in a breaders coop but then his chickens never left the building. It was a constant temputer all year long. Has anyone else used a heater in their coops?

I installed an automatic door in my new coop cluckinghame palace. It has a thermometer plug as well. When the temperature gets below 40 degrees and the door is closed the plug turns on. We plugged a heat lamp into it. Seems to work really well. Now I need to figure out how to get water out there when its really cold. The hose works great for now but what does everyone else do to get water to the coop in freezing weather?

So Red if you have that bator about three weeks we are gonna be suspicious.......

And speaking of you coming to Logan, and visits to friends you can come see me too if you have time while you are up here!

I have a Lowe's bucket...I fill it up in the kitchen before I go out to check for eggs, and take it out with me and top off the waterer. I saw they have heated hoses at cal ranch, but they were 100 plus bucks for a 25 foot hose, and my coop is far enough I would need a 75 ft hose, so I figure taking the bucket out is cheaper and if i do it each morning I only have to fill it about half full.

I've been doing so much reading on egg binding and internal laying. I have concluded that there is really nothing else I can do for my little one. I'm just going to make her as happy and comfortable as I can. She is still doing fine right now. Walking slow but still eating and moving around.

I need to hatch some eggs to get though this slump.

Cynthia great hatch were those shipped eggs?

i use only one waterer for my girls. just a 5 gallon bucket with 4 heavy duty nipples. and i have a heater that drops in that will kick on when the water gets down to around freezing temperature. i will just take a bucket of water and fill the waterer up since i cant use a hose. i actually got my nipples local, a guy in west jordan sells them by the nipple or by the bucket with nipples installed. the price was so much better than ifa. i even got some extra nipples so i can make another waterer if i want. :) they will make less of a mess if you have your bucket set at the right height, its a very common mistake to make.

Haha Lisa, as interesting as it would be to stick some of my barnyard mix eggs in that incubator, I don't know the first thing about incubating eggs. I'd probably end up killing them all. And I'm not set up for more chicks right now, anyway.

I'd love to come visit if I get the chance! I'll have to figure out when to stop in and see ya. That would be awesome.

Hattie, so sorry about your girlie

I wonder if she doesn't already have some infection, by the sound of it. Poor baby. I wish I lived closer to you. I would totally come help if you guys decided you need to put her down

Cynthia, yay for cute, sweet, fuzzy babies! I'm glad your hatch is going well.
