Utah!

on nipple waterers freezing i do not think they will, i know my heated rabbit bottles do not and its the same kind of thing. plus mine are in the coop and out of the cold wind. even with not heating my coop it stays warm out there, this new coop even more because its not on the north side, it was 73 degrees in the coop last night with my huge vents mostly open. i cant remember but i think chickens put out like 12 watts of heat each.

Yeah, I was hoping the nipples wouldn't freeze. I haven't heard complaints, so I'm figuring it's not common.

Cynthia, I'm sorry the one didn't make it. That definitely sounds like there was something wrong inside for it to die at that point.

I got my first fart egg you guys! I've owned chickens a few years and never had it happen til now. It only weighs 8 grams!!

Well, given that I would either put it in a 3 or 5 gallon bucket, I would need less than half the power of yours I think. Thanks for the heads' up. I think I'll go there tomorrow.

That sounds like a great idea! Does she vent sex them? i wish I could do that. What colors she hatching? Hope you get girls! I have a the worst time trying to sex them by feathers, crests, anything else, they seem to defy all the standard boyish/girlish rules. And have had way too many boys this year, no matter where I get them, just seems to be mostly boys :)

Im not sure what she does... I just hope it works lol

yeah i think you are right. mine will do okay in a 5 gallon bucket but it may be more than i need but oh well. i think the one on sale is the 250 watt :)

I knew some of you would have some good insight on the water nipples. I am one to take hot water out for the outside bowl. I have a bowl in the coop that is heated..plug in.

Guess what? I always like to let the person know when I have a pretty decent hatch. So, this time with the Cinnamon Sussex, I wrote him letting him know, plus had a question about the color difference. Two are pretty white already. Three are more yellow, and have a brownish tint around the neck and wings. I asked if that is what he was seeing in his babies that he hatched,,that turned out to be the Cinnamon. I got a phone call! He called to answer my questions. Pretty nice guy. And Sphinx, you want to know about where good places are to get shipped eggs...this would be one..lol.. He is in California.
I find the mid west is good. The South East has been really good. I like Kentucky, and Alabama, and Tenn., and Arkansas. The upper north has not been so great. The southern part..Florida, and Georgia has been real good. Idaho has been good. :)

Will post pics tomorrow of these babies. I've taken the pictures. Just need time.

Just wanted to share a picture of my Australorp (Big eyes) in the nest box. She really likes her privacy. I wish i could get video of this. You can always tell if she in in the box before you open the door cause she starts screaming at you. Its kind of like walking in on a stranger in the bathroom or dressing room. Sometimes i hurry and shut the door and look around to make sure none of the other chickens seen me.

Thanks Cynthia!!! That is very helpful, some of my eggs will be coming from Florida, so I was a little worried about the distance...Oh, and Cynthia, do you have them label the boxes as fragile?? have you noticed a difference with labeling like that?

Speaking of BA's... I can't believe mine... she has only missed one day since she started 3 weeks ago... wow. Still pullet eggs but gradually getting bigger!!

SPhinx.. .those fart eggs are funny!! I got one from my BSL first thing this spring... I left it in the fridge forever because it made me chuckle, when I did finally use it, it was mostly yolk...

And thanks for the info on the nipple waterers and heating and stuff... considering my options, hmmmmm

I've been thrilled with the nipples. It's been so much nicer than my old set up. I like it even better in my chick brooder- I was having to clean chips out of the water multiple times a day before. Once I got these guys to figure out how to get water, it's been sooooo much cleaner.

I've only done the shipped eggs thing once. It was an adventure. They shipped from TN during USPS's busiest week of the year- the second week of December. Then, my regular guy didn't deliver the mail that day, and the back up driver FORGOT to deliver the box. I threw one heck of a hissy fit because it ended up being stuck in the post office here for a good 48 hours. I ended up getting 6/7 to hatch, which was great, except that I didn't get the breed I paid for. I was supposed to have golden laced wyandottes, and only one turned out to be an actual GLW, all but one of the others were mutts (RIR/GLW mix), with one being a straight RIR. I complained to that seller, and she said she'd send me new eggs, but I never did take her up on it.
