I have been sick to my stomach all day over this. I can't imagine what those parents are going through. I am glad the gunman was killed and I just wish the teachers had been armed and could have killed that SOB before he killed so many. I wish that more people were armed like they are in Switzerland where every citizen carries a gun. I think things like this could have been prevented.

My heart has been aching so much lately, and this really adds to it.

On a (better?) note, two of my chickens may be coming with me to work next week for a short period of time. They are having a doomsday party, and each department is supposed to come up with a creative way to show what they think the end of the world will look like. My department decided it would be funny if the chickens were the only thing that survived. So, I'm working on tracking down some diapers. And, deciding which of the ladies are calm enough to handle going to work with me without being too upset. I don't want to traumatize any of my girls.

I found a second white egg today! It was inside the coop when I went to let everyone out and feed them. I'm going to separate my Leghorn and Icelandic and see who it is that's producing eggs.

If you got two in a row..it's probably a leghorn.

Does anyone know if i cross a RIR rooster with a Australorp hen will it give me a sexlink? Australorp chicks are black and white at first just like a barred chicken. Just wondering cause i had another hen go broody a few days ago and when i take the eggs she is sitting on she just finds more to set on, so i broke down and gave her two eggs tonight. One RIR/Australorp and one RIR/Dominique-Barred. I also have another Silkie trying to go broody but she still like to go outside in the morning to eat wheat with the flock. (They get wheat every morning to start their day off).Apricot is still broody so i let her have three small eggs. I did make her a feed dish and water dish in her nest box so she can keep her weight up.
This is Fluffy trying to be broody but im not falling for it....yet.



This Momo the one i just gave the eggs to She is my Bantam EE. Its hard to see but she does have puffy checks and a little beard.



And here is Cotton. Sorry about the nest box Cynthia but i ran out of time to build her a nice one. But she dosent seem to mind in fact she is supper sweet and likes it when she gets petted.

Isn't it strange when hens go broody in winter. I have 2 sitting on fake eggs. I just don't want chicks right now.

Oh my gosh, Madchicken, your broodies are cute! You're going to need a broody buster.

I separated my Leghorn and Icelandic tonight. I put the Icee in the layer suite with the Leghorn/EE for a buddy, so if I find a white egg in there, I'll know it's Flekka. The Leghorn is out in the coop, since she's a wanderer and likes to check out the yard during the daytime.

My wild turkey has taught both the white turkeys how to roost properly, but the biggest girl still likes to go cram herself in the coop with the chickens. So I've got her snuggled up in there, but my two smallest birds, my younger Icee pullets, like to go roost with the turkeys. They think the wild turkey is their buddy. Sometimes I'll see them parked right next to her on the branch, and in the morning, they hang out together while they wait for me to come let everyone else out. They're such sweet girls. Hattie, I'm so glad I got them from you

If you cross RIRed Roo with a pure black breed, "from what I understand", you should have red sex link babies that are girls. The black babies should be boys. The black has to be a pure black, or pure white, or pure barred--with none of the red or orange genes in their type. This is what I have read, but not tried--so take it with a grain of salt I hope it works! I have read the the Black Austr roo with a RIRed mom gives you black sex link baby girls as well if you did it the other way around.

My Violet, my BR--my FAVORITE girl that is so smart and rings the bell, and announces egg arrivals---passed away today. It was pretty sad. I believe it was a vent prolapse, I have never seen it before, but it looked as it has been described--she has been laying giant eggs the past few days, then stopped yesterday, starting puffing up and standing about like she was not feeling right, then all this stuff emerged today, an egg that was just ridiculously too big and just all this other not good stuff, she just bled and then died...man it was sad. She went fairly quick, when it happened, I did not even have the time I was trying to gather my thoughts about how to put her down..but I was just so shocked, and she is the last one I imagined would just ..not be there anymore...ugh. All trying to lay those nice eggs for me. What a sweetheart. So, she was like the momma out there, she was my head hen, kept most in line, and protected newcomers from any meanies, I will really miss that girl! The best personality in a chicken I have had so far. She was one I would have kept past laying, as a pet...of course my luck would have her be the one this happened to.

I am feeling better tonight, so I surely don't want anyone feeling bad too--but just sharing the news, because I know a lot of you will remember me talking about her. Dang it. Rest in peace Violet. <3

In other news--I candled my eggs tonight, lockdown should start tomorrow. All three look good, i marked the air cells and decided to set them in position a little early because they are just so tiny, and those eggs look awfully full. A little extra time to make sure they can turn the way they need to. I have had bantams hatch a day early, so this is my plan. Humidity up in the morning. Will see what happens.

sorry for your loss i know i worry about my girls that lay the huge eggs, i watch closely and will cut way down on their protein if i see eggs too large. so hard to loose a special girl like that. rip violet. at least she had a great life where she was loved and cared for.

Aw thanks Birdman. We did love that girl so much That was nice of you to say that! Will take a bit to get used to not seeing her out there in the morning, yelling about all the eggs waiting to be gathered. Silly girl.
