Utah!

I hatched some buttons a while back, this is the cage they went into. Tiny babies!

I had fun setting the cage up. I got the cage on e-bay

The right age for a cage, and DH put plexaglass around the bottom so they couldn't fit
through the wires.

Here they are bigger. Love the blue and white.

They love paper towel rolls.

Hey Lisa,
I finally was able to get on the site.
Bryan

I'm not Lisa, but welcome!

Aww Cynthia, now I want little ones too :) They are so tiny and cute, like having chicks ALL the time.

Red, ever figure out who shaved/stole your chickens? I keep hoping they will get caught :) Donna had those stolen too, I just can't imagine a chicken thief, what the heck are they thinking? That is a lot of consequences to pay for stealing something that is so easy to find and pay a little money for. (or a LOT if it is legbars lol) If anyone ever tried to sneak in my yard, my dog would scare the crap out of them at least....after all he thinks that is "his" dinner he is protecting.....

Sorry, I've had a lot of work stuff going on and couldn't get on. Trying to catch up.

Red, ewwww on the broken egg in the pocket.

Can't wait to hear how the emu eggs go.

Sundance, wow, that's terrible- four broken eggs. Do you feel that the eggs were properly wrapped? I think sticking them plain in an egg carton and then wrapped in paper towels seems inadequate. You've gotten lots of shipped eggs, so I'm sure you have a good feel for it.

Wow, Cynthia, that's an adventure with that hawk. I'm glad you didn't have any fatalities. Those quail are so cute!

Lisa, I have two hens laying right now- my speckled sussex and (maybe?) the RIR. It appears that the BCM cockerel gets all the ladies, so that'd be the cross. I'd be happy to give some to you to hatch if you want.

Welcome Bryan!

I'm trying to control my temper, but I'm pretty mad. The guy renting pasture space next door moved some new cows into their yard a couple days ago. I was going out to water my birds, and he stopped me and said that he had had a bit of an adventure. One of the cows jumped the fence when they were trying to get them into the pasture, and unfortunately, that fence was into my chicken run. He said that it had ruined the netting I'd put up to keep hawks and raccoons out. He offered to replace the netting. I owed him some money for cow immunizations, so I told him we could call it even. I was hoping that I could repair the netting. Well, I get out there, and the cow also detached a bunch of the chain link, so it droops to about a foot off the ground for about 3-5 feet. Then on the other side, he cut a slit in my chicken wire about 5-6' long to get the cow out. So, my chicken run is completely compromised- I have a ton of work to get it anywhere near safe for the birds to be outside. We have nearly two feet of snow on the ground, which makes it tricky, and my husband (i.e. handyman) doesn't get home until after dark. If it was summertime, it wouldn't be a big deal to fix, but right now, it's really, really difficult. I've blocked my chickens inside because it's the only way to keep them safe until we get the repairs done. Oh, and the netting is pretty much completely destroyed. HUGE holes in it. ARGH.

You are amazing, you know these things! You really are "birdguy" ! Thanks for posting this, I am armed with information and dangerous. I have to figure out what this giant bird is we have in our back tree, if i can get a picture i will post and see if anybody knows what it is. It is not these...it is HUGE.

Birdguy--this is funny. Lady called me today, about the FBCM chicks--she just happened to be the one wanting turkey eggs from you in Logan. Small world eh? WE were trading info and she is talking about the turkey guy in Id Falls. haha. Bet I know who that is! It was you. Pawtraitart, I also gave her your webpage info, she is interested in started pullets, I am out of chicks for now. Hope she calls you

I told her I have some birds ordered from you too so maybe we can ride-share if they are ready at the same time. She is on BYC but have not seen her post yet.
I actually raised a pair of sparrow hawks when I was a kid in St George.. Their nest was inside a window well in one of the old pioneer buildings. the window got boarded up and a couple days later they found the nest inside... I successfully raised them to maturity and released them back into the wild.. (also rehabilitated desert tortoises and other stuff for the F&G)

We had some chickens stolen a couple of times out to the farm too.. The weirdest thing is twice now INSIDE the barn I have had a bird disappear.. first time was a guinea and this last one was an icelandic roo.. There is no way they can get out of the barn and we have looked everywhere inside... can't find them.. the guinea re-appeared after 4 days and the roo yesterday after 3 days... have no idea where they could have been....

Birdguy that is so weird for them to disappear and reappear--are you SURE they were not hiding in there somewhere, it is such a big old barn...shoot I could probably hideout in there for days without being seen lol :gig Hey how are those big old black pigs doing through the crazy winter? I have been meaning to ask ya :)

Sphinx, that is a bummer about all the damage, maybe he (the neighbor) could help you out to fix it? He really ought to, due to it being his animals....I hope your birds don't get too mad at you about being locked up. Thanks for the egg offer! I bet RIR/Marans would lay nice big dark eggs :)

It wasn't the neighbor- my neighbor is renting out pasture space. The renter guy works graves, so he's sleeping during the day. I'd rather do the work ourselves so I know it's to my specifications.

Sorry! This doesn't sound like you came out even at all! Too bad he has to sleep in the day..the only time that is a reasonable time for now. Sounds like a lot of work. Be careful, don't over do. Hopefully our days will stay in the high 30's like they say they are. Then you will probably be working in muck. Oh dear.

Ah I get it, and I would probably feel the same way. Dang it to the whole situation though. And Cynthia is right, you need to recuperate slowly from being sick, try not to overdo it!

Well, remember that when *I* go work on stuff, it's primarily me watching my dh do it. LOL My dh is seriously such a sweetheart for putting up with me.

This renter guy also feeds and waters all of the cows (including mine) 2x a day. So, other than a weekend when I covered for him when he was out of town, I haven't had to feed/water them since I weaned them. He's given them two different immunizations, and then the one had a cough (that admittedly probably came from his cows) that he's had to give a couple shots of antibiotics for. After giving him antibiotics for pinkeye the two times, I'm pretty good with NOT having to do that. If I get in a big pissing match with the guy, I would be stuck feeding them myself (which would be tricky because he used all "my" hay, and is now working on his supply), and watering them myself (which would be hauling water by hand 100' to the pasture. So, I think it's better for me to grit my teeth. And I know he feels bad about it, and I do think he is a nice guy. He saw us out working on the pen tonight and apologized again. I just hope it doesn't happen again!

Tonight dh and i went out there and used bits of a dog kennel to create a temporary wall so that the damaged chain link and netting area isn't available to the chickens. Then, we used another section of kennel to block off the damaged chicken wire. It's not pretty, but I think it'll last til spring.
