Utah!

I have been looking for a vet in Utah that would do a decrowing procedure on a rooster so I could have a viable flock for years.... I even offered to split cost with a vet on equipment to try the procedure and got no where.   Shoot me an E-mial if you know the information on the vet that is performing the procedure so I can get in touch with them.

hey bryan. welcome! so what animal control agency do you work for?

He was saying they lay at about 8 weeks old, and lay an egg a day, really well...that sounds good to me! He said the bobwhite were nice too, not as messy poop, but the coturnix lay a little bigger eggs? Seems like something fun to try. I LOVE the button quail, they are so cute, but only want ones I can keep outside in the run for now.

Do you have a preference bob white or coturnix? I am information-gathering before I decide

I have some newly hatched jumbo brown coturnix quail and a snowflake bobwhite quail chick available. The coturnix lay a much bigger egg than my bobwhites.

Michelle--you have the jumbo brown? I think that might be what I will try. Do you have hatching eggs for sale? Or would you when I come pick up pullets/chicks? I think my kids would really like hatching their own :) I was looking at shipped eggs last night but they are so small, I wonder if they would do very well through the mail.

Guys! I see blue sky peeking through some clouds this morning...could it be? My girls needs some sunshine, their egg laying is pretty pathetic right now.

My quail have stopped laying for a bit, but you know, there are some good deals through eBay for jumbo browns and they hatch fairly well. They are cheap enough to give it a try if you want to get an early start.

Bob white eggs are not good to eat.. They cook up like rubber... Cotunix eggs are much better. Coturix are very tame gentle birds that do not fly too well. Bobwhites can bust up and fly like crazy.

I hadn't thought of eating the quail eggs. I raised the bobwhite for the sound of their calls. The chuckers for the beauty. They are very tame and very pretty birds. I;ll ask Carolyn if you can contract her. She is so busy she usually prefers to have someone go thru me. Did you have a tyoe of rooster in mind.

Did it look like this one on the left?

The American Kestrel aka Sparrow Hawk.... Males have the red while the females do not..
Pretty close, there was red, like red as a chickens comb and wattles, I am beginning to wonder if that dark red was blood from it trying to get out. I just didn't get a look at it for a very long time, it was flying all over trying to get out, then it landed on the nest box, then down by my chicks, and did they ever scream! Scared them pretty good. Then, it was out of there. It looked pretty scared when I saw it for a few secs. on the box. It was small like a sparrow hawk. I really have to wonder if it was after the mice. They have three holes in that run. Trying my new mouse catcher today. :) I would much rather have that in there than that bird. :D
