Utah!

It has become totally clear that I can't hatch chicks when I am working all the freaking time. I put 4 Isbar eggs into lockdown a couple of days ago then, yesterday, when I was checking them, I started thinking there were an awful lot of eggs in there and when the heck were they all going into lockdown? Checked my handy-dandy Google calendar which, of course, failed to tell me when I put some of these eggs in because I was too stinkin' busy to do more than think, "I'll have to enter those in the calendar." Evidently, Google calendar can't read minds. Who knew?

So I looked at the dates for all the ones I HAD written in there, extrapolated as best I could, and came up with the idea that most of those eggs would hatch somewhere around Friday. Knowing I am working pretty much every night this week and have multiple meetings going on, I thought I would be clever and just stick them all into lockdown now and be done with the matter. We're talking about something like 60 eggs of various flavors.

They are hatching. Yes, today. Five out and another 3 pipped when I left for work. I am a failure as a hatching Mommy. Talk about poor prior planning. I now have absolutely no idea how many of them are actually due to hatch today, tomorrow, the next day, the next century, whatever. I have brain damage from working so much. Or possibly for caring for so many chicks. Not sure which.

Pip, pip, pip, cheep, cheep, cheep. Ack, ack, ack.

Oh Donna your posts are so hilarious! I always get the craziest vivid pictures in my mind of what you are saying lol. Total circus at your place, eh? Well, at least they are hatching, that is good! Lol. Mine keep being duds. I think the Spring sunshine is wacking out my house temps and keeping the incubator steady is a full time job. :/

Been quiet on here today! Rain is depressing, eh? Tomorrow=better ;)

We went camping for a couple days, and you guys write TEN PLUS PAGES of posts. It's so hard to keep up!

Sundance, I'm so sorry about your rooster. I know you'd had high hopes for him. Wow, we were quite close to each other. I was camping about 20 miles outside of Blanding, and we'd stopped in Moab for groceries.

Cynthia, sorry about your NN.

Chickenstock: I was all set to go, and looking forward to it, but dh (somewhat gleefully) reminded me that I'm signed up to do a 50 miles bike ride that Saturday morning, so I can't go. :(

DesertSprings, I'm giggling over your new Legbar Rooster. Too funny! I stuck 3-4 hens in with my legbars so my hen wouldn't get too worn out. I just read your family troubles. I am so sorry. HUGS to you. I wish I could "babysit" your bees for you, but I just don't think I am in a place to take on new species of pets right now. Don't twist my arm though, because I would most likely cave. LOL

Doughie, love how the coop is coming along. Looks great.

Darbygill, congrats on such a great first hatch!!!

Sasha, I just love the look of those chicks. So beautiful!

Corvidae, it's like an easter surprise!!! I'm sorry, but I think it's hilarious.

So, we went camping for a few days. We weren't supposed to get home til tomorrow, but the forecast changed on us, and since I have a strict "No-Hiking-In-Slot-Canyons-With-Flash-Floods-In-Effect" policy, we decided to come home a day early. The kids are really disappointed, but I stand by my policy. There's been some field drama with my cows, but nothing I can't fix in a day or two. Chickens are doing well, though they're still not laying well. Only half are laying with any consistency at all.

Sorry I have missed commenting on so much in the last couple of days. I've been busy.

to all, both the active posters and those who are quiet.

Our power went out at 4:00 this morning. I wouldn't have much cared, except that I have those eggs in the incubator. Thank goodness I was awake right when the power went off. And thank goodness for a very sweet brother who is a night owl! We stuck a couple of bottles of hot water in the bator and covered it up with his wool blanket. I spent a little bit fussing over it before I got back to bed, and then when I finally did get another hour of sleep, I had a nightmare that somehow my bator had spiked up to 145 and cooked all my eggs to death! I was sick. Woke up, got up and checked on the incubator, and found that my brother had taken the blanket off already, as the power had come back on. It was 103 in there, so I opened it to cool it a few degrees, since I keep it around 100.

Most of the eggs in there have only been in for a couple of days, but I do have one from my own flock that is much further along. I don't know how much time it has left, but it's getting close. The egg is filling up quickly and every time I've checked that egg, the embryo has been super active. No guarantee that it's a pure Icelandic, but I'm happy that this little one is still going strong.

Now, here I sit swooning from tiredness, and I need to get ready for work. Oh, boy. Today is going to be hard, I think. My mom's car is having a fit again, so I need to take her to work, too. I'm kind of scared to drive. But, I do hope that everyone has a lovely day. Stay safe in this rain.

Hey all! Looks like I'm a little behind. I got super caught up in the Easter hatch-a-long!

Thanks Bluejems for the eggs! We got 3 FBCMs 1 OE and 1 WA. (There were 3 other OE/WAs that were shrink wrapped...

They were so close!

One of the FBCMs is super weak though. I'm going to try feeding it with a syringe. We'll see if that will save his little life.

Also, one last question. Does anyone else have Easter-born chicks they are trying to get rid of? I was hatching for my friend as well as myself, and I don't think I'll have enough for both of us...

I had one FBCM that was weak too. I syringed some vit/electolyte water and put some in the brooder and it perked them up, took a while but seemed to help. (just a packet of stuff from IFa

Awesome. How much do you give it per feeding? And how many times a day? They are adorable by the way. I'm bummed more WAs and OEs didn't hatch though! They are awesome little guys!

I am in Logan and have some hatching Thursday/Friday :) I am selling most of them, there should be some FBCM and wheaten Am in there if you still need some. GSL's also, and some barnyard mix of Orps, Wyandottes, and I forgot what else. You did great for your first hatch for sure!
