Utah!

Anyone out there have Light Sussex or Coronation Sussex.. Eggs or birds.... We had a nice flock of 2 roosters and a few hens. A dog got in and killed all of the hens... The 2 roosters survived.

Hi Guys, We are still new to this chicken raising stuff, so need some advice about what the heck is going on with our birds right now. We have six hens that are a year old, one of them is starting to molt....we were expecting that but all of a sudden, it's like world war III has broken out with three of them beating the cra...stuffing out of each other (one of the three is the one molting). Is this behavior normal when they molt or is this just, for lack of a better word "PMS" behavior? They have gotten into it so bad that I even had to put fingernail polish on a couple of bloody combs. I must admit that the one who is being picked on the most is the one who used to be the b*tch of the group. I don't want them to hurt themselves but should I just let nature take its course and bind the wounds.....or invest in a cattle prod? Well, that might be a little harsh but I do have a spray bottle of water that I could use when we are home. They are kind of a captive audience to each other while in the coop. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. And with the two little ones, trying to introduce them to the mature hens appears to be quite the endeavor during this turmoil...out in the open the little ones (they are two and a half months) can pretty much stay out of their way but they have gotten in the run and been cornered. None and I mean NONE of the hens are broody, so the little ones are really on their own around them...so I'm guessing we will be keeping them in the brooder for another month at least. Maybe the histrionics will have abated by then? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks..

PS, love the pictures of all the chicks but it makes that chicken math start acting up!! That's how we got the little ones!

I agreed with madchicken - this sounds like a pecking order issue. I've had a number of minor squabbles pop up in my flock from time to time. Sometimes they just need to sort out who's boss, and it can take more than one go-around, unfortunately.

Thanks Cynthia. I love him. He is so nice. He will let all the kids pick him up and wont attack the dogs or cats. I wish all roosters were like him.

This is interesting to hear. I have considered getting a RIR roo before, partly for breeding and partly because I would feel more confident in this breed guarding the flock than I would some other breeds that can be.........well, pushovers.

Thanks Red. This is giving me hope. I got worried for a while. Your tattle tale makes me laugh. Chickens have such personalities. Too funny.

Yeah, I get some weird look from people at work when I tell them that my chickens are like two-legged cats. And here's the Delaware I had last year, because I never get tired of showing her off so that other can compare

See how she's getting the little bit of red up their on her comb?

And a good shot of her girl shape.

But WHY do I have to wait to have a smaller flock? I miss having a Delaware, boo.

Darn it! I was going to get one of bluejems babies but work exploded and I couldn't get up there! :(

Does Blujems have more hatching? I have some of hers in the bator hatching tomorrow. Just a few though, Blu do you have more hatching? If you do I am travelling south to SLC on 4/13 and can deliver chicks for you if you have some more for sale. ;) I only will sell mine on here if/after hers are all gone. I will be Plan B. ;)

Sold three of my older big girls today. Now I just need to sell a few more lol, my garage is overrun with chicks. I was pretty happy I found a really nice lady to take the three, they will LOVE their new place. They have llamas! Fun!

I'm tempted to send my daughter up to see her dad in SLC and have her pick up one or two if they are available. I'm in Las Vegas, so that is quite a drive. I work most days and its 12 hr shifts, so... No driving for me on my rare days off.
