Utah!

Well, none of my UofA eggs hatched. Some developed a little (two out of twelve), but quit pretty early on. So sad. I am 0 for 0 on shipped eggs. I have birchen marans cooking right now. They look like they are doing well, so I hope they hatch! Someone posted that they are hard to hatch, but no one has given me instructions on what to do differently.

Casa, congrats on the pics! Congrats to all the new hatchlings too!

The chicks that hatched a week ago are all doing great. I am going to try to get some updated pics this weekend. They still look to be two girls and a boy. They all think I am mama, which is endearing.

One of my houdans looks like it may possibly be a boy, if it turns out to be male do you want him for breeding? I hate to give such a pretty bird away on ksl for free! I am definitely ordering more of those from McMurray next spring, I like them a lot :) Sorry to hear your UofA eggs did not hatch! Dang!
I am starting to wonder if the SBEL's also sexed backwards, the would be females are slightly larger combed and a bit more pink than the would be boys...do yours look backwards?

I may hit you up on the boy. I do have a few more coming, but am having bad luck with hatching shipped eggs.
The SBEL's seem to be right on cue for me. The one you said looked boyish is feathering slower and has a bigger, three row comb. The girly one has no comb and more feathers.

Lil that is good to know. Hopefully mine will fall in line shortly lol! I won't rehome the boyish Houdan unless I check with you first.

Somebody in the garage crowed this morning. I have another one!....I could not figure out who it is. The garage door seems to set them off if it frightens them. Of course when I opened and shut the door ten times no one would crow. My nieghbors probably wonder what the heck I am doing with my garage lol

Guess what? I got a message from C-A-L this morning, one of my chickie pics won! Yay! I never win anything, so I was really surprised

Thanks Blujems for the link on the contest

A wheaten Ameraucana chick from last summer of course. They really are the cutest babies. I think it was this one of these two, I sent in a few so not sure, butthese were in the ones they replied to in their email.

Congrats!!!! So cute!!!

Corvidae, yeowch! Some hens sure seem to take a lot of lovin's from their guys. I have a couple of pullets here that make me laugh; they usually haul off after the gentlemen for their 'services' and whip their bums

Can't remember if I said this a while ago, but my mom's Welsummer is a tattle tale. She sits out there and yells whenever she walks into the coop and finds an eggs. Or if someone's sitting in the nest mound. Funny girl. She also shouts at her own eggs when laying them. "Get out, get ooout!"

Winning is so great! I told my wife a few days ago... "All I want is to win a stupid contest on backyardchickens!!!!"

Congrats!

Hi Guys, We are still new to this chicken raising stuff, so need some advice about what the heck is going on with our birds right now. We have six hens that are a year old, one of them is starting to molt....we were expecting that but all of a sudden, it's like world war III has broken out with three of them beating the cra...stuffing out of each other (one of the three is the one molting). Is this behavior normal when they molt or is this just, for lack of a better word "PMS" behavior? They have gotten into it so bad that I even had to put fingernail polish on a couple of bloody combs. I must admit that the one who is being picked on the most is the one who used to be the b*tch of the group. I don't want them to hurt themselves but should I just let nature take its course and bind the wounds.....or invest in a cattle prod? Well, that might be a little harsh but I do have a spray bottle of water that I could use when we are home. They are kind of a captive audience to each other while in the coop. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. And with the two little ones, trying to introduce them to the mature hens appears to be quite the endeavor during this turmoil...out in the open the little ones (they are two and a half months) can pretty much stay out of their way but they have gotten in the run and been cornered. None and I mean NONE of the hens are broody, so the little ones are really on their own around them...so I'm guessing we will be keeping them in the brooder for another month at least. Maybe the histrionics will have abated by then? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks..

PS, love the pictures of all the chicks but it makes that chicken math start acting up!! That's how we got the little ones!

Is the one that is molting the top hen or second to the top? I had problems in my flock when the second top hen molted. She didn't want to hang out with the other hens and would run from them when they got close. The only hen she would hang out with was the top hen who is her sister. During this time is when some of the younger hens ganged up on my little RIR. They ripped her skin open on her skull down to the bone, tore half of her comb off and broke her leg and hip. It was complete chaos for a couple months as they tried to fill the missing void. They also attacked my bantam rooster and left him beat up and bloody. Hens can be very mean when it comes to who is above who. Luckily the hen came out of molt and quickly let everyone know she was still second. The rooster got braver and a little bigger and is now the third highest. The top hen is molting i think, its hard to tell cause she is always missing feathers and has bald spots, but some of the bald spots have new feathers. She is still at the top and know one gets in her way.

Thanks Red. This is giving me hope. I got worried for a while. Your tattle tale makes me laugh. Chickens have such personalities. Too funny.
