Utah!

I was talking to a co-worker a little while ago who was going on about her neighbors chickens. She thought they were great, but so noisy! "They must have about 6 or 8 of them over there," she tells me, looking amazed. "Uh. Huh." says I, trying to look impressed. "Don't you have chickens, too?" says she. "Yeah. I keep some chickens." "How many do you have?" asks she. "About 60 or 70. Maybe it's up to 80. Hard to count them." Dead silence ensues. She blinks a few times. "Aren't they...well...kind of noisy?" "Oh, no," I tell her. "I only get the really quiet kind. Hardly a cluck out of them." "Oh! That's great!" she says. "I should tell my neighbors about that kind! What are they called?" "Stealth Chickens," I tell her. Now, rest assured, I will enlighten her later in the night so she doesn't actually go running off to her neighbor to encourage her to get Stealth Chickens. It was just to fun and I'm not really known for my niceness...

This was the funniest thing all morning.... you made my day!!!!

thanks!!

(My roos always crow when I'm on the phone.... they must think I'm talking to them ans start talking back!! LOL)

LOL Corvidae! That is so weird that she's complaining about how noisy they are. My roosters are noisy, but my hens are really quiet unless someone is laying an egg. And honestly, it's hard to hear that over the neighbor's dogs barking.

So final hatch report: I got 6/7 hatched. The last legbar was dead in shell. Perfectly formed, just before internal pip. Don't know what happened. I think it was a little cockerel. I have three legbar hens and one legbar cockerel. One FBCM, and one olive egger.

I'm so upset though- the fbcm has a goofed up leg. I've taped it, but I'm still traumatized from my chick a year ago with that that didn't make it. Cynthia, I know you've had several. Do you just tape them for a day or two? Anything else you do? I'm tempted to put it in a coffee cup as well, since it had 24 hours without me realizing (this is what happens when they're not at home with me). Also, while taping, I realized it's right eye was gunked shut, so I had to clean that off too. Poor thing. It sure is cute though. I really, really want it to be ok.

Morning Wendy,

In the past, personally, I've just used a super small bandaid on bad legs. They are pliable enough but still give the support and keep it straight to heal right. Hope your baby's leg will be okay!!

Huge congrats on your new babies!!!!

There are lots of those around...Sphinx might have some chicks for sale, if not she might have fertile eggs you can hatch or someone could hatch for you...Daloorashens might have some for sale--she will be at chickenstock Saturday--i am headed there too if you want to pm me your number I could call you if there are some there and see if you want one...there might be some more people there with some...Blujems might have eggs too I cannot remember if her rooster is still there or if he was dispatched, he was being ornery. I am done hatching, what I have left is a blue Marans and a FBCM to see if they are girls, I might sell one if they are both female. I think they are both boys though.

FBCM eggs=pretty

I would love to go to chickenstock, but we are so far south in Utah County, that I don't think I will be able to make it up to Idaho for it. Just barely found out about it. But I'm going to try and plan on going next year. It would be fun to go see all the different breeds, we just got chickens this spring, and it all started by rescuing four babies out of a trash can at the gas station, now which 3 of the 4 have been re-home since they were Roos, (well my poor neighbor picked 2 and his both were roos, haha). I'm really thinking that the 4 preschool mystery bunch that we got I have 2 possibly 3 roo's too. 1 we know for sure, and then I always questioned the one that wasn't feathering, and today, has bright red wattles, but its comb is still yellow, only 5 weeks. Just makes me so sad, since we have raised them for 5 weeks and we might have to find them a new home. Plus I love their feathered feet. So hoping the other one says looking like a pullet, and the other one I believe is a Bantam, hasn't grown, and it still looks the same but with tons of feathers. I would love to hatch some, but we don't have the equipment to do that, but I'm already trying to figure out where I could put another coop, and how to go about telling my hubby, I want to have a flock of 70. Wishful thinking, but I would like to add to what I have now. I would love to have all different colors of eggs. Maybe one of these days I will live where I could have a Roo, and try to get some of my own.

You should be writing books. I thought you were nice!

I got my Aussie Spot eggs today! (Bantam ducks) ordered 6, got 8....the box was smashed! I was terrified to open the box....but all the eggs were ok! Whew! They are a pale green, about the size of a chicken large egg. So I let them sit all day and just candeled them. 2 of them have saddle air cells, but amazingly, the rest look pretty darn good! A couple of the eggs look like this...

Is that not the COOLEST swirly egg you've ever seen? That's so cool!! I just had to share. :)

That is way cool. Hope it is fertile for you too!

Silly. I'm not going either. Mostly because it's so far, and because I can't drive... Due to anxiety issues. So you're not alone~ I also have done a lot of useful thinking. :3 Until then, it's just the Utah Fancy Poultry Association for me. Miss those guys, you know... Miss how we used to have a meeting every month. Miss talking to people who share my passion, learning from experienced people in person. And seeing lots and lots of birds. xD

I'm thinking that I may sell alot of these chicks I'm hatching out. Going for 50¢, I will though raise chicks if anyone wants me to. I know it's frustrating that Brahmas take awhile to grow out, but at a few weeks of age I am confident I can tell the genders of my birds, and I spend a lot of time with my chicks, teach them to jump up on my lap and cuddle. At the time they're old enough to go outside, I'll sell them for $3, 75¢ for each additional month... Eh, really just a thought, but I would seriously go for it. I've learned though that tame birds, you need to keep working with them to keep them that way for a few more months. But yeah, most of these chicks will go, may keep a couple but most will be gone. I'll hatch some more Brahma eggs, making sure they're Lilifey's chicks, later on. Possibly with Mozart and Dynamite's chicks (that's what I named the Sizzle, because my teacher said it looked like he exploded) but I'm not sure. Got plenty of time this summer, right? ;3 I want to keep some of my Brahma chicks I hatch this year.

Is there anyone here who might have Orpingtons around the 19th? That's when my Brahmas are due to hatch I believe. Not picky on the variety, I love the other colors I've seen besides the common Buff, but I like their personality more than anything. Again, chickens are my companions and lap dogs, lol

I need to bug my mom to get our permit... Before these chicks hatch. o.o

I do tape. I just had to tape a couple lately, and sometimes I do use a cup too. Remember what I use? Electical tape. It's so easy to use, and it's easy to get off. These are photos of tape on the feet, because of a middle crooked toe. It usually only takes one day of this and the toe is straightened. When I need to tape for splayed leg, I cut the tape long, then cut a thinner strip than it is on the roll..usually in half is just right. I put the legs out where they should be..you know that part, then I leave it a day, then look to see how they are, then if they aren't right yet, on goes the tape for another day. Like I said, I just had a couple of chicks that were bad, and I used a cup the first day. They tend to not do so well if they are kept in a cup too long. They get too weak and seem to lose the will to strive. I try and keep the tape long enough so they can stand and squat and hobble around.

I wanted to offer some ameraucana cockerel chicks for free if anybody is intereted. I have blue, black, and silver and they came in a st run order directly from John Blehm (the former president of the Ameraucana breeders club) and they weren't cheap but I don't need all 8 cockerels :) http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/issues/2/2-3/John_W_Blehm.html

Attached is a pic of a blue boy. I actually waited for 2 years to get these birds since John's orders are filled fast.
Has anybody else ordered from him before?
I asked for all chicks hatched from the bluest eggs he had and I got a mix of black, blue, and silver chicks.
Could be some nice new genetics for somebody!

These can be brought to the IF chicken stock on Sat!!
