I don't want to hurt my little Houdan's feelings but they seem like the dumbest breed on the plant. When the two Wheatens go up to the roost at night my Houdan cries at the bottom of the ramp.I'm not introducing my little ones to the flock for another few months and hopefully they can defend themselves by then.

So funny! The one I lost was like that, just not real bright, I had to show her the food if I moved it, things like that...my other female is pretty smart with finding things and taking care of herself.....and she dodges the big girls a lot better when they come pecking...then my boy is a total mental case...he runs into the coop walls, he was standing on top of the waterer the other day, bawling for help to get down, kind of a big baby. But I really like how I can hold them and reach for them without them being skittish...and they really get along with everybody and I could never picture them fighting or hurting another chicken out there. They are just big dumb babies lol but I love it for some reason When They go out in the yard, the girl goes right back in the coop to eat and drink and the boy just stands by the door trying to figure out how to get back through the gate, even when it is wide open. (Hello!!??? haha) I have to put about two new ones out each week, it is going ok so far. This one that died was plenty big, just did not have the survival instincts of flight to get away. I knew that too, should have kept her separated My two younger Polish are that way, they will be staying in their own blocked off area for the time being, I am not taking any more chances....I feel bad I took a second chance with this one yesterday.

I *think* I got a call from Joybells' dad, arranging chicken train. I know I'm picking up something from Lisa tonight, and am meeting him in Taylorsville on Thursday evening. Does this ring a bell?  I got realizing I didn't know her real name, so I didn't dare start asking about user names. ROFL

I'd be happy to drive anything else down here from Logan, so definitely text, PM me or whatever.

No one tell my husband, but I saved 7 more chicks today. I should have taken a picture of these poor babies before I gave them a bath. I went to a daycare today to drop off a lunch for my friends son, she forgot to take his backpack today. And when I went in, he had to show us his chicks, since he knew we had chicks. OMG, they were in the most horrifying situation. Their water was so full of poop that it was all the way up into the quart jar, I think it was totally all brown. She said she thought they were eating a laying feed, from what she was told (didn't look like chick mash or pellets to me), huge pellets small dish full of poop as well, and every chick was completely caked with poop, shavings, what looked like left over egg goop, there was barely any feathers that wasn't glued to there bodies with junk. I said to the teacher, what are you planning on doing with these chicks. I really wanted to say WTH are you doing to these babies. She said she was trying to find a parent to take them. I was like I can take them right now. She said perfect, gave me a box, and out we went.

I felt so bad, but I fully had to give each one a complete bath, and it took almost 10 minutes of soaking and gentle rubbing to get everything off of them. Seriously almost 1 1/2 hrs giving them all a bath. I hope that was okay to even give them a bath, I didn't know what else to do with them. So I have no idea what they are. I did ask her, and she didn't know, but I did ask her the egg color. She said that they were all blue or dark brown, she said that most that came out of the blue eggs didn't make it, so I have know idea how many they started with. After giving them a bath, one does have puffy cheeks like my EEs, and then 3 look like a Maran. I have one yellow with a black feather on its wing, and then a brownish one. At least they are all sitting under a 250 watt heat light right now, and they are starting to fluff out. Poor babies.

Hopefully my sister was serious when she said that she was going to take a few of my chicks when she comes out next week. Because I for sure have enough chicks to share now. She has an acre out in Rio Rancho New Mexico, and she was talking about getting chickens before I even got chickens. And she will most likely take my Roo since she can have Roosters.

I will have to post photos when they all dry up, to see what you guys think of these babies.

so i guess i cant work on my run today. its kind of frustrating because its my dads only day off this week and i needed his help. i am toying with the idea of a cream legbar but i may play it safe and wait. my one ee that has one eye is going a little crazy in the head but i am not sure i could ever put her down. its hard. its like putting down one of your own kids. not something i can do

Ed drove all the way to Corinne to get some day old chuckers stopped at if a on 21 s no chicks they r done darn stopping in Ogden to see if they have any who has day old-s between Ogden and tville that I can get tonight I need to get these chuckers under the broody tonight and need the chicks to with them 801 5977854

Does anyone have any pullets or younger hens they are getting rid of?

I have 3 young chicks available. I have now idea on the breed, i think they are mixed, but look to be large foul. I think they are around 6 weeks. These are chicks i got from Sundance when i bought her Bantam RIR. I have decided to keep the frizzle. I also have some older birds available. 2 to 2-1/2 yrs. They still give you 3 eggs a week. I have 4 available so that's a dozen eggs a week. One is the top hen so she looks a little beat up but is super nice, she is a EE. She lays a jumbo green misformed egg. They other is her sister that lays a large blue egg. Also have a large RIR hen from a breeder not hatchery stock. She lays a brown egg with dark brown speckles. The last is a mix. she lays a large pink egg. None of these older hens are mean. This would be a great flock to start with to see how older hens act and how large some breeds get. They do not fight between themselves and do need to free range. They do not like to be cooped up. I am just in Lehi and you are welcome to come see what i have.

I am going to Orem today and tomorrow.  Does the chicken train need any rides.  Also Brian lives near Highland Alpine area and I'm sure he could do Chicken train as well.  Brian like the way I volunteered you?   Does anyone have any cochins hatching?  I have two broodys and am going to put a chick under them with some chuckar chicks.   I don't have a LF cochin so I may like those.  What else is everyone hatching?   Americana? 

 

I have lav ameracauna and salmon fav's in the bator right now. About to candle them on day 11? I think, for the first time.

Update on Expedee the cat: He was doing better this morning, with his labs looking more stable and him up trying to play with the drip on his IV, so they went ahead and did the surgery. He had a huge rupture in the abdominal muscles, which is actually good. Much easier to put the interstines back in through a large hole rather than a small one. He is all sewn up and recovering pretty well. We went to see him again tonight before I came in to work and, while he was obviously having some pain, he still purred at the boys and seemed rather comforted that they were there. They had to take him off the pain meds yesterday because he was having some serious adverse reactions to whatever they were giving him. They've started a different one post-op and, hopefully, that will keep him comfortable. Vet says if all goes well, he can come home tomorrow or the next day.

I feel bad for my chickens--haven't had any time to do more than throw food and water in their coops. I'm not even sure if we got eggs collected today.

Corvidae, I'm so glad that Expedee pulled through surgery ok. I hope she feels better soon and can come home.

Sundance, I was quite close to Corinne. I could've gone there on my chicken adventures today.

Tonight I picked up my cute little cockerel, Joybells' swedish flower hens and Desert's wheaten ameraucanas. Desert, you'll have to get in touch with my so we can arrange to get these cute little guys to you.

Forgot to mention, Sillycmoy, I can't even believe the conditions they were keeping those poor chicks in. That is just wretched. I'm so glad you were able to rescue them. It'd be really cool if you got some gorgeous marans hens out of the deal. That would be good karma for you.
