Thanks! Wow - that poor chicken in the thread has a bad underbite. I've been researching a bit on here. Today I took the PediPaws to it (that's how we trimmed Pioneer's nails) and I got a bit of the excess off. She's also got this weird growth under her bottom beak. I think it's part of her throat or something. She also seems to carry herself different than a normal chick with her head more tucked in. I guess as long as she's happy, healthy, eating, drinking, and the other chicks aren't picking on her, I'll try not to worry, but it is a pretty bad overbite. Sounds like cross beaks are a worse prognosis than over/under bites.

I'll try and post a picture of her. She's just in that super ugly stage right now and the lady put green food coloring on her head to mark that she wasn't "for sale".

She's a red sex-link. I went to Pleasant Grove to pick up a buckeye, cuckoo maran, and salmon faverolle. Ended up with two buckeyes, cuckoo maran, delaware, and the sex-link. So there are ten in the brooder right now.

Just what we need... more chickens.

SpeckledHills - I pulled this from the link. This is exactly what I'm hoping to do and you just gave me the confidence to try it!

I'm hoping that if I take a bit off each week, I can make it more manageable. I'm hoping that her being young and still growing will help. I know her beak will never be perfect, but with some manipulation and filing, I'm hoping I can help her a bit.

P.S. - Wanna come and help?

I forgot to let you know about the two bumblefoots we did a couple of weeks ago. I should have taken some pictures. We're having good luck with the results. Some chickens (from last fall) are completely healed! And the two we did this spring are from the two chickens who are always going to have problems because they are the opposite of "light on their feet".

I ~thought~ things were pretty quiet in the Utah thread.
But no....
Somehow I got unsubscribed from here, and now have 10+ days and 100+ messages to read.

Argg....

I've been incubating 42 eggs for the past 16 days. I go into "lock down" on Tuesday. Should have some chicks by Friday/Saturday. Yipee!

I've always thought about having people come over and check out my stuff, but I'm afraid some code-guy would come out and tell me I'm doing something wrong. I think I'd rather remain semi-anonymous.
Besides, I don't want to chance having someone drag in any bird diseases...

I'm just South and probably a little west of you. I've seen hawks (small), raccoons, cats, rats, and mice. The hawks, falcons(?) have sat on my fence and telephone wires. They're a little small to take a chicken. And, I'm getting pretty good with baseball sized rocks. Not good enough to hit them, but I've come close. They haven't been back since. I've seen raccoons around, but have delt with them with Coyote piss. (yes, it's true. You can buy anything in this world... on the internet). After the first spray, I haven't seen them sense. Rats and mice are easily taken care of with bait, but I don't want residual bait laying around, so it's traps and peanut butter. They don't pose too much problems.

I have a 4 foot high fence, and not covering. (trees and shady places for the birds to hide). Haven't lost anything to a predator yet, knock on wood. Going on 3 years.

i was thinking that you guys are so close to the dell that there would be more predators there than where i am, near brighton high ~7200s/2000e. i lined the coop with a little bit of concrete to discourage digging from whatever can get in the run. after hearing all the hawk stories i may need to reevaluate keeping it open, though i really only have a small portion that isn't covered by the cherry tree. that tree attracts lots of tweet birds, so i hope the chickens under it don't end up with some sort of disease from them.

Ok, I wasn't sure I believed my neighbor, but... I guess we are just over 2 miles just north of the dell. Last fall my neighbor said that he saw two coyotes jump over his back yard fence once morning. He hasn't seen them since, and I wasn't sure I believed him. But, I suppose now I might. He's about 5 blocks away. There's nothing but houses between us and the dell.

Anyway, time to put the chickens away (Grin)

Anyone in the southern or the central part of Utah looking for Roosters?!? I have (5) 9ish weeks old, I need to find them good new homes!... free if you'll pick them up, some are leghorn crosses, I have one Blue x, I would let go of for the right price....I just keep holding out hope they are just fast maturing pullets:hit

I got the interior of the coop completed over the weekend. I set up a shade shelter to keep my tools and me dry while it snowed and rained. All I Have left to do is put the exterior siding on, paint and install the wire annd get the nest boxes built.

hi all utahans!

I am ordering my chicks today and I can't wait! Im so excited to be a chicky mama. I live in Syracuse utah and have not been impressed with animal control/code enforcement. So I am afraid I will have have to stick with just 6 hens.
