Utah!

sundance, that's a good thing to know about their claws, I've never had a problem with any of my girls having too long of nails. I know that some people need to trim the girls..I will be watching the boys now, when they get older.

Red..you and your chickens, always finding hiding places for your eggs! ha ha..maybe you can train this one that you know is laying out there, to go into the nest box. And..Pumpkin! My girls need some pumpkin. :)

wait until after halloween pumpkins for to 50 of 1.00 I buy 20 and feed them once a week sometimes twice a week if its really cold. I have to trim all my Seramas nails but the boy seems to grow faster. I had a scary visitor today. A really big hawk. Not the coopers that hangs around sometimes but this bird was huge. He was sitting on the back of outdoor swing eyeing the chickens, They were scared and were all in the coop. I think it was after the chicks and Seramas but he was big enough he could probably take the bigger chickens too. They are going to stay in the coop and covered run for a few days

Heck ya they are CHEEP the weekend after! Plus we carve our pumpkins the night before halloween, so they are still fresh enough to feed to the girls, then we get more bang for our buck. I put little electric lights in them so no wax.

I have been rotating out all the old/freezer tasting weird stuff I have collected in my big freezer...the girls are getting spoiled right now, lots of freezer stuff plus some older food storage/pantry items I needed to get rid of. I tend to be a pack rat, so knowing that I can give it to them makes it easier to throw stuff out that we likely won't use. Today, they got poptarts, chicken nuggets, frozen green beans and 4 cans of pork and beans, and some crookneck squash and butternut squash. They powered through that in 15 minutes flat then sat out there and yelled at me. "Where's the seconds Ma??"

I am starting my fodder seeds again too--Cynthia are you doing fodder again this year? I really liked it last year but lost my enthusiasm toward March...so now it can be fun again :)

Lisa, yes! I was just thinking about that the other day. I think I'll go put some wheat in a bowl now. :) Just to get them interested in it. They love their grass..hopefully these gals will like the fodder. I also give them a lot of fresh spinach too during the winter. I have some chard out there, but they don't like it.

Sundance, how do you worm your chickens? Do you use Sevin dust to delouse them? I need to have you give me another tutorial on trimming chicken nails. A couple of mine really need it. You make it look so easy.

Madchicken, congrats on the new eggs!

Red, I'd love to see how the Icelandics are coming along.

Nothing too interesting going on with my flock. I think my broody mama is about done with her chicks- they're 7-8 weeks old and are gorgeous. I think they're ready to go home. Brian, are you still interested in them?

That really is sad Christina has to let the birds go after all that work! UGH!

Red, the picture of your mix made me drool. She is beautiful! She does have that icelandic look to her from what I could see, I am with Sphinx I would love to see updated pics of how they all turned out.

And YA it is COLD out today! The rain makes it feel ridiculously cold. I have babies out in the coop, they got the heat turned on this morning. They were all huddled together in the corner.

Anybody want a jumbo coturnix quail flock for $25? I have two, and am thinking about selling one so I only have to maintain one during the winter. I have a rooster and 4 girls that could go. Fun little critters! They lay every single day, but you have to keep a light on them to keep them laying through the winter. We will be going to Disney on Ice in SLC Nov 6, so I could bring them south.
