Utah!

Sundance, how do you worm your chickens? Do you use Sevin dust to delouse them? I need to have you give me another tutorial on trimming chicken nails. A couple of mine really need it. You make it look so easy.

Madchicken, congrats on the new eggs!

Red, I'd love to see how the Icelandics are coming along.

Nothing too interesting going on with my flock. I think my broody mama is about done with her chicks- they're 7-8 weeks old and are gorgeous. I think they're ready to go home. Brian, are you still interested in them?
I would love them but I'm hurting for money so bad I can't even make rent so go ahead and give them to the other that wants them. Sorry I had the money for them but our bill were more expensive then usual.

I figured out who one of my mystery layers is. It's my BO. Man, that girl is sneaky! I think she changes the shape and size of her eggs just so she can mimic someone else and throw me off.

And, here are pictures of the Icelandic juveniles I have, for your viewing pleasure:

Ike, my fine young cockeral.

These next three are the ones Sphinx hatched.

Sky ("cloud")

Silfer ("silver") Her little crest is pretty flat in these.

Reika ("wander") Becaue guess who was always the one furthest from mama and out of sight?

Geez they are turning out so nice! I love the Silfer, pretty cool feathers!

Oh, Red, they are so pretty!!! I can't believe how big they've gotten.

Brian, I completely understand money issues.

Lisa, you asked about the fbcm. PM/text me if you want them. If not you, then I'll move on to 6kidsfarm.

I pm'd ya! Trying really hard not to! Want? yes. Should? .....Ummm No. My coop is a disgrace. I counted 62 today, down about 40 from this summer, but still......what am I thinking!

I did find a home for my paint roo, Brandi is taking him. I have enough babies from him, goodness, and I need to remove the temptation to hatch more eggs. Incubators.are.put.up!!!! Roosters are dangerous for me I have decided. Like crack......:p

The hawk was back today. He was sitting on my back fence again. I got a better look at him. Its the cooper again. He's a bit bigger than last year. My poor chickens all took cover under things but the two polish. They decided to play dead. I went running out because my gold lave was laying really still and funny in the yard. She was fine just playing dead. Ed was convinced the hawk had killed her because of the way she was laying so he ran and got the bb gun. Not the Pellat gun but the bb gun will just sting not hurt. Just as he came out and was taking aim the flock of doves that live in the area came swooping in and beat the crap out of the hawk. It was pretty funny watching the little doves take on that big hawk and winning, He flew off and the doves were in hot pursuit. Earlier in the year the chuckers took on the local magpies then the doves took over. Today even the chuckers were hiding. It amazes me the genetic memory the chickens have knowing to hide or freeze. If I hadn't been so worried I would have enjoyed watching them hide. But all chickens, chicks and chuckers accounted for and uninjured feathers all intact,

Sundance, that is the sole reason of why I tolerate the magpies in our yard, now. They police the Cooper's hawk that lives around here in the summer, which means I don't have to worry nearly as much about losing a chicken. Glad you have the doves to do the job!

The magpies here were trying to eat the chicks and were stealing the eggs. They would go right in the coop and steal the eggs. I now know the hawk comes around 400 so
I just need to be sure to be home to make sure he is scared away. I ordered another automatic door and am going to have one that only goes out to the run and another one that goes out the front door That way if I don't want them to go out of the run I can turn that door off and if they need to be in the covered run the door will open and close on a timer. When there is heavy snow and stuff U don't let them out of the coop and covered run. Now that there is a hawk danger they will just need to stay inside. When the weather is decent I will let them use both auromatic door. I also noticed a bunch of mice out there so am going to get a live trap, I wish the hawk would only eat the mice. He would be welcome herein that case.

I had a bad evening yesterday, Despite my efforts the hawk got one of my chicks. I went outside just in time to see him fly off with it. I had them locked up but the chick went thru the wire. Any ideas how to get rid of a hawk. My concern is that now hes got one he will be back to pick them off one by one.
