That just sucks. I don't even know what else to say. Then to top it off, all the mites.

Thank you, I'm taking this much harder than I ever dreamed I would. Even with chihuahuas, this morning was so quiet without her. She was so unusual and funny, I don't think I'll ever come across another that scratches & knocks at the back door, claimed the big dog bed as hers, came running when I started cooking dinner, or would truly watch TV.

I keep thinking "what if I took her to the vet despite my husband anyway", what if I just tried treating the eye without cleaning, what it, what it... She was there and fine one second and gone the next. I even tried to resusitate (sp? too late) her, and calling her thinking maybe she was in shock.

It's so hard to know when to draw the line when it comes to vets & chickens. I've had a bunch of medical bills for me and still paying on equine vet bills (that are over $1000)...

I hope you can fix your hen. I've never experienced bumble foot but there's always a first. Pls keep us posted. If you need any electrolytes I have some I can give you. Also Betsy's crate you could borrow if you need to quarantine her. Good thoughts your way~

Also a note to all~ watch for teeny tiny bird mites. I found my big girl coop & betsy with them. I've never had mites (b4 Bets) so I have again DE'd the coop and stepped it up a notch and purchased some more lethal stuff in case I need it. We found that they have indeed come from wild birds (and probably mice & chipmunks). We hv two robin nests on the high beam by our front porch. Mama bird was obviously killed and both babies have been crying all day. When we picked them up we were immediately crawling with hundreds over those ugly little mites. So we DE'd the babies and put them in a big crate out front just hoping one of the parents would come back (they can't fly yet). No parents and one baby that had fallen out of the nest and had a hard time walking tonight died in my hands (how's not fun, 2 birds in 2 nights, and 2 horses just last Feb.

Long story short, we have found different baby/injured birds in years past and have NEVER seen this kind of massive infestation. The water & weather maybe? I don't know if any bird, much less a baby, will live long with that many on them. So just a heads up. We even got them just collecting eggs and didn't notice at first because they are almost pin-prick size. Good news is they don't jump to different hosts, just chickens & birds. now I'm off to pray I did't just jinx myself....

So sorry for your loss.

I also just found a baby robin on the ground a few days back. It couldn't fly yet either, mom and dad were going crazy trying to keep me from it. I picked it up and put it on a branch, it couldn't stay. Yep, I checked my hands for buggies, but none! So, I fixed an open place for it, with a couple of branches in it for it to perch on. Stayed on those, and then put a basket of shavings in for the night. Did the basket for two nights, it was able to get up and out of the basket fine, so let it perch on one of the sticks night before last. Yesterday, it flew out of the place I had in in. Mom and dad have been less frantic since I had first started feeding it all the worms I could find. It is now perching on our pear tree..in reach, it flew there itself! I did feed it some this morning. It was in the same place for quite some time, now is getting brave enough to move up and down the tree branch. I think this baby will make it. Found it's sibling a day after I found it, dead by the back fence. Wish I had seen that one too.

I know, not a chicken, but thought I would post a picture of the baby robin..too cute..

The baby Robin in the pear tree now..I still feed it once in a while during the day..it's just staying pretty much in the same area, same branch, and I can reach it to feed it. Doesn't seem to mind.

Oh nooo, the bird man...think it's infected now? It's so hard to watch them in pain. I've heard of Bumble foot, haven't really seen one, only in pictures..it does look painful for the chicken. Sure sounds like you did what you could though. Keep us updated...

Crap... can you please try to give her another day? Maybe give her aspirin water for the pain? Animals do not feel pain quite the same as humans, it's a nature defense thing. There was someone on this board that could fix bumblefoot and if I knew anything I would come and help (not that you want me after seeing that Betsy died), but I have seen horses & dogs in pain, but if you can at least stablize her to get her on the right track? Would soaking it in warm epsom or sea salt water help??

An animal in pain is hard to watch, but they can handle the pain if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know this from rescue, so please give her the benefit of the doubt until you know you've done all and there's no going forward.

I guess I just don't want you to feel the same loss as I do with Bets. Maybe look through the posts and find that person someone recommended for me to call? I never did because she started getting better (at least she acted fine and was laying). I can mail off some electrolytes tomorrow if you need, just email me your address (I'm not great at checking PM's.).

I'll be sending good thoughts her way~

Our 2nd little robin made it through the night. My daughter officially adopted it and checked on it every 30 minutes. She has experience as she raised a naked baby all the way to adult hood and the bird's been back to say hello and this is year #3!

Anyway, little dude died this morning.

Thank you and you're right. It sucks and there's not much else to say when this kind of stuff happens. It's wasn't a horrific image like when I lost my filly but Bets had really become a member of the family and it's very obvious she's not here. We're attacking the mite problem and bird nests are being taken down as babies are leaving. Got a Garden & Poultry Dust (Permethrin), which I detest the thought of using but will use it if I don't get this mite thing under control.

I can honestly say now that as much as I love dogs, when/if I outlive my little chi's I'm going back to a house silkie chick(s). Betsy even trained herself to go potty on the linoleum (sp?) in the kitchen vs. the carpet. Saw a youtube where someone had some diapers made for chickens. That just might be me when I'm old and wearing purple hats.
